Job description

THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated senior-level Marine Mechanical Engineer with strong experience in shipboard auxiliary systems to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)'s Ship Design Team in Baltimore, MD. An ideal candidate will have prior experience with design, optimization, and integration of marine auxiliary and piping systems, ship machinery integration, cargo handling systems, and weight handling systems calculations and analyses, as well as familiarity with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs, standards, and regulations.

Typical Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical support and documentation design, develop, and evaluate the operation of marine vessels, ship machinery, and related equipment, to include, but not limited to: auxiliary systems, hydraulics weight handling equipment, rudders, piping, pumps, valves, and HVAC, and apply to applicable design and requirements.
  • Develop system documentation and ship specifications.
  • Provide leadership and coordinate review efforts for verification and validation work for Auxiliary and piping systems related work efforts in the Mechanical Engineering discipline.
  • Design, develop and evaluate operation of marine vessels, shipboard auxiliary systems and piping, review and develop technical data packages, provide oversight on development of machinery arrangements, conduct and oversee trade studies.
  • Review design review comments submitted by junior engineers and advise decisionmakers on considerations for high impact and critical design review decisions.
  • Provide mentorship to junior mechanical engineers related to the area of shipboard auxiliary and piping systems, ship machinery integration, cargo handling systems, and weight handling systems calculations and analyses.
Location:

Primarily onsite (3-5 days/week) at USCG Surface Forces Logistics Center (SFLC) in Baltimore, MD.

Travel:

Up to 10% travel is anticipated for ship checks.

Typical Physical Activity:

Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion. Periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches) or vision.

Typical Pay Range:

The anticipated pay range for this position in the identified location(s) is $120,000 - 150,000. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience.

US Citizenship Required:

Due to the requirements of the federal contract that this position supports, U.S. citizenship is required. Citizenship will be confirmed via I-9/E-Verify at the start of employment.

Security Clearance Eligibility Required:

This position requires a DoD Secret security clearance. A qualified candidate must either already possess an active or interim Secret security clearance (preferred); OR be eligible for a Secret security clearance upon hire.

Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Bachelor's degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant technical, engineering, or a marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution. Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least six (6) years of progressive experience in design, optimization, and integration of marine auxiliary and piping systems, ship machinery integration, cargo handling systems, and weight handling systems calculations and analyses.
  • Experience leading auxiliary system work efforts for Government or commercial shipbuilding programs strongly preferred.
  • Experience providing mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Knowledge of ABS, USN, and industry standards relating to shipboard auxiliary systems.
  • Proficient with common productivity software.
  • Strong communications skills.
