Job summary

A.I.S., Inc. is seeking an Observer Gear Technician in Seattle, WA to support the NMFS Alaska Fisheries Science Center Observer Program gear team. You will maintain, repair, and issue observer gear, document activities in OGIS, and prepare shipments to Alaska field offices.

You will pack gear sets, perform gear check-outs, and participate in weekly meetings while ensuring readiness for roughly 500 deployments annually. Strong communications and safety gear knowledge are essential.

Qualifications

• Experience collecting scientific information onboard commercial fishing vessels or shoreside processors.
• Knowledge of duties and responsibilities of fisheries observers and equipment.
• Knowledge of Alaska coast fisheries and vessel types.
• Experience using basic hand tools to repair equipment such as spring scales and baskets.
• Experience using shop chemicals and power tools for cleaning and repair.
• Experience inspecting marine safety equipment such as immersion suits and PFDs.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and operate a motor vehicle.
• Valid driver’s license and Real ID; able to undergo background check.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair gear, prepare complete gear sets for deployment.
• Pack up to 150 gear sets monthly following packing protocols.
• Conduct in-person gear check-out/check-in with observers or employers.
• Document gear activity in the Observer Gear Inventory System (OGIS).
• Prepare shipments to Alaska field offices and coordinate with shipping coordinators.
• Participate in weekly gear team meetings to prioritize work.
• Clean and organize the gear room and manage gear inventories.
• Operate a van on campus to move equipment between areas.
• Provide a monthly progress report detailing accomplishments and issues.
