Marine Electrician III — San Diego, CA

Job Overview

Continental Tide is searching for skilled Marine Electricians III for our Fleet Services in San Diego, CA. The successful candidate will join our Fleet Services Group performing various ship repairs, modernization and Alteration Installation Team (AIT) projects.

Essential duties & responsibilities
  • Inspect, repair, install, modify, and maintain electrical/electronic systems, circuits and equipment.
  • Perform on-site field service for system grooms and checkouts, minor repairs and system configuration validation.
  • Set up, check, and correct operational and experimental electrical machinery, circuitry, and equipment while adhering to pre-established guidelines and engineering specifications.
  • Assemble multi-pin connectors and fiber optic connections.
  • Construct components, subunits, or simple models or adapt standard equipment and troubleshoot and correct malfunctions.
  • Perform component and/or system troubleshooting to diagnose the problem and provide most cost effective recommendation for completing repairs.
  • Perform and/or verify mechanical alignments.
  • Read, interpret, and understand simple schematics and blueprints.
  • Inspect and test electrical systems and equipment to locate and diagnose malfunctions, using visual inspections and testing devices.
  • Extract and compile a variety of engineering data from field notes, manuals, lab reports, etc.; process data, identify errors or inconsistencies; select methods of data presentation.
  • Conduct various tests or experiments which may require modifications in test setups or procedures; operate standard test equipment and record test data.
  • Follow specific layout and scientific diagrams to construct and package simple devices and subunits of equipment.
  • Identify and make recommendations to shop superintendent regarding problem areas in contract work items.
  • Participate in the installation and maintenance of AC and DC generators, switchboards, distribution panels, lighting, and alarm circuits.
  • Lay out, pull, and splice wires.
  • Circuit labeling, testing and troubleshooting.
  • Write simple purchase requisitions for the purchase department.
  • Instruct helpers, apprentices, or less skillful electricians.
  • Take and record motor and generator thrust, clearance, and alignment measures.
  • Identify materials and parts required for job performance and selection of substitute electrical components when necessary.
  • Proactively problem-solve, write reports and give suggestions for solving those issues.
  • Perform additional duties outside of standard responsibilities as needed to support production and project completion.
Requirements
  • Must possess a REAL ID or U.S. Passport.
  • Must be Copper Connector Certified & possess fiber optic experience.*
  • Target of seven (7) plus years of practical shipboard experience with HM&E systems and equipment.
  • Possess NAVSEA Cableway and Connectorization Certifications.
  • Technical expertise with power generation and transmission equipment, motorized valve actuators, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), fiber optics and integrated network system experience.
  • Candidates must possess a high school diploma, GED or industrial school certificate.
  • Setting up, checking, and correcting operational and experimental electrical machinery and equipment while adhering to guidelines and engineering specifications.
  • Be able to read, interpret, and understand simple schematics and blueprints.
  • Repair and replace cables and connectors.
  • Familiarity with NAVSEA standard concepts, practices, and procedures within electrical repair, fabrication, and installation.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a SECRET clearance and must be able to obtain DBIDS to access local shipyards and US Navy bases.
  • Must possess basic hand tools.
  • Travel up to 75% may be required within and outside the continental United States.
  • Must be able to understand, read, and communicate in English for job instructions and safety information.
  • Must be able to pass an Audiogram, Respirator Fit Test, and physical exam.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified in Multi-pin Connectors IAW MIL-STD-20035A (SA).
  • Certified in Fiber Optic: CFOS/O, CFOS/C, CFOS/S, CFOS/T, CFOS/FC.
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience as a Marine Electrician with 3+ years of supervisory responsibilities.
  • Experience with maintaining budgets and materials.
  • Familiar with NAVSEA Standard Item requirements.
  • Currently certified to perform wire way inspections in accordance with NAVSEA Standard items.
Physical Requirements
  • Exposure to open-air environments, including noisy, hot, and cold conditions.
  • Required to visit project sites aboard ships and rigs, both onshore and offshore.
  • Must wear PPE (hearing, eye, head, and hand protection) as required.
  • Stand, bend, crouch, and climb over obstructions such as scaffolding and ladders.
  • Exposure to sound levels exceeding 100 decibels.
  • Must possess visual acuity and depth perception to inspect components and operate tools safely.
  • May work in confined spaces with limited ventilation.
  • Requires prolonged periods of sedentary work and may operate machinery or heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 30 lbs. or more.
  • May need to ride ships at sea for extended periods and tolerate ship motion.
