Job summary

CSS, Inc. is seeking a qualified Bioinformaticist to support the Marine Mammal & Turtle Division of the SEFSC.

The role involves research to improve laboratory and data analysis techniques for understanding marine species distribution and abundance and informing fishery management and conservation. You will work on molecular techniques for marine and anadromous species, participate in lab, field, and statistical projects, and contribute to eDNA research.

Qualifications

• MS Degree (or BS with 5 years of relevant experience) in Marine Science or related field.
• Ability to go to sea (generally).
• Experience leading a small team preferred.
• Expertise in Bioinformatics.
• Ability to present and publish to peer-review audiences and journals.
• Experience with NGS data analysis including RNA-seq, exome-seq, WGS and methylation analysis.
• Strong knowledge of R/Bioconductor, Python, and other programming languages used in data science and bioinformatics.
• Experience with data visualization tools such as ggplot.
• Proficiency in scripting languages (Python, R) and knowledge of software engineering best practices.
• Working knowledge of marine mammal or marine science research activities.
• Ability to lift/carry at least 40lbs and work outdoors for extended periods.
• Initial physical exam and/or periodic medical monitoring may be required for sea-going roles.
• Ability to pass a National Agency Check (NACI).
• US Citizenship or legal permanent residence is required.

Responsibilities

• Use statistics and computational approaches to assess data and results influencing fisheries management and conservation.
• Provide analysis of existing and future genomic datasets and facilitate project lead analysis, including development/testing of tools.
• Coordinate with the program manager to identify research priorities and manage data delivery deadlines.
• Manage laboratory approaches, purchasing, inventory, and training of new employees.
• Occasionally participate in data collection and analysis of anadromous or marine organisms.
• Establish partnerships with internal/external scientists and agencies.
• Collaborate with groups to share information and meet objectives.
• Prepare management reports, information products, and presentations; publish in scientific journals.
