Job summary

BD is seeking a Manufacturing Unit Leader in Sumter, SC to own production, processes, and people within the unit. You will deliver on SQDC targets, eliminate losses, and grow team capability while ensuring BD quality systems and safety regulations are followed.

You will set goals, drive accountability, manage budgets and headcount, and lead 24-hour direction on the floor with strong people leadership and cross-functional collaboration.

Qualifications

• BA/BS degree in Science, Industrial Management, Business, Engineering or a related field.
• 5 years of manufacturing experience in a highly automated environment.
• 3 years of people leading experience.

Responsibilities

• Accountable for achievement of key strategic, operational and functional goals.
• Developing and mentoring the manufacturing unit to drive results with focus on production and capability development.
• Coordinate and drive all activities within the manufacturing unit and set priorities.
• Manage the manufacturing unit’s budget and headcount levels.
• Establish and communicate SQDC goals and ensure targets are understood with measurable plans.
• Lead changes to meet short and long term SQDC goals.
• Resolves issues on the line and within the unit, upholding BD values.
• Oversee TMS cycle for lines/areas and set 24-hour direction.
• Conduct yearly performance reviews and develop personal development plans.
• Lead AM activities and create AM work processes.
• Facilitate BD excellence implementation within the unit.
• Collaborate with Logistics to establish production schedules and monitor delivery.
• Provide regular coaching to hourly associates and document progress.
• Collaborate with HR when needed for issue resolution.
• Develop mastery in operations, people management and BD Excellence.
• Spend >50% time on the production floor overseeing activities.

Job Description

The Manufacturing Unit Leader will have overall ownership of production, processes, and people included in the respective Manufacturing Unit and will be fully responsible to deliver upon SQDC targets, to eliminate losses in the area through BDPS and to grow the capability of the team. This role has responsibility for the designated product line including setting goals, making decisions, and driving accountability toward department objectives in the designated Manufacturing Unit. Ensures compliance with BD quality systems, policies, procedures and best practices, and all local, state, federal and BD safety regulations, policies and procedures. Regular, punctual attendance is an essential job function. Ability to read and write and converse in English. Willing and able to uphold BD Values.

Job Responsibilities

• Accountable for the achievement of key strategic, operational and functional goals.
• Developing and mentoring the manufacturing unit to drive results by focusing on production, associate capability development and ownership.
• Coordinates and drives all activities within the manufacturing unit and sets priorities.
• Responsible for developing and managing the manufacturing unit’s budget and headcount levels.
• Coordinates the establishment and communication of challenging SQDC goals. Translates manufacturing unit targets into lines / areas / workplaces and ensures that each associate understands what is expected from them with documented individual, specific and measurable targets.
• Initiates and drives change to ensure that short and long term SQDC goals for the lines / areas under responsibility are being met.
• Resolves issues in the line and for the manufacturing unit in a timely manner, while displaying servant leadership. Manages the team in line with BD values.
• Runs the TMS cycle for the lines/areas and sets the 24-hour direction for the manufacturing unit;
• Does yearly performance reviews of the team and ensures every individual has an active development plan in place and does regular 1:1s with each team member to review performance and help them to grow.
• Leads AM activities being responsible for creating AM work processes (e.g., CIL, CL etc.)
• Facilitates BD excellence implementation within the manufacturing unit.
• Collaborate with Logistics to establish production schedules, monitor delivery performance versus schedule.
• Ensures regular, timely, and accurate assessments of hourly associates are delivered through coaching activities.
• Works with associates to resolve issues and concerns; involves HR when needed.
• Builds his/her own mastery in the operation, people management and BD Excellence.
• Spends more than 50% of the time on the production floor overseeing activities within the manufacturing unit.
• Other duties as required to support the needs of the business

Requirements

Education and Experience:

• BA/BS Degree (Science, Industrial management, Business, Engineering or a related field)
• 5 years of manufacturing experience in a highly automated environment required
• 3 years of people leading experience required

Work Environment

• BD is a smoke-free campus. Smoking and the use of electronic smoking devices, marijuana, or tobacco products are not allowed on BD property, grounds or in the parking areas. We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to this policy
• False eyelashes, press-on fingernails, and Jewelry is not allowed on the production floor including dermals. Any associate wearing dermals will be required to cover them while working on the production floor.
• Shoes are required to be Steel Toe and non-slip for all associates while on the production floor for safety purposes.
