Job summary

Caterpillar Inc. is seeking a Manufacturing Project Engineer in Decatur, IL, to lead global manufacturing process standardization for RFT Heavy Structures. You will influence designs for manufacturability and drive scalable manufacturing solutions across facilities.

You will manage capital projects, apply Lean principles, and collaborate with Product Engineering, Operations, Quality, and Supply Chain to deliver measurable improvements in safety, quality, delivery, and cost.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Welding Engineering, or related field.
• AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or equivalent qualification.
• Experience with robotic welding, automation technologies, and advanced manufacturing systems.
• Experience developing and implementing global manufacturing standards in a multinational org.
• Experience using manufacturing data analytics and digital work instructions.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development and execution of a global manufacturing process standardization strategy for RFT Heavy Structures across global facilities.
• Serve as the manufacturing engineering representative within Product Engineering, advising on manufacturability and DFM improvements.
• Drive global process standardization for fabrication, welding, machining, assembly, and inspection to improve quality and efficiency.
• Lead capital investments and manufacturing improvement projects with measurable business outcomes.
• Develop and optimize processes for large welded structures, including tooling, automation, and production readiness.
• Apply Lean and Operational Excellence to identify waste, unlock bottlenecks, and implement sustainable improvements.
• Partner with Product Engineering and cross-functional teams through the product lifecycle to support DFM, APQP, and manufacturing readiness.
• Strengthen capabilities by mentoring engineers and sharing best practices across global teams.

welding, machining, assembly, material handling, dimensional inspection, and process control to improve quality, efficiency, operational consistency, and manufacturing readiness.* Lead capital investment and manufacturing improvement projects, managing scope, budgets, schedules, risks, and stakeholder alignment while delivering measurable business and operational results.* Develop and optimize manufacturing processes for large welded structural assemblies, including welding technologies, tooling, automation, quality systems, and production readiness activities, while identifying opportunities to commonize processes across products and manufacturing locations.* Apply Lean Manufacturing and Operational Excellence principles to identify process variation, eliminate bottlenecks, resolve manufacturing challenges, and implement sustainable improvements in safety, quality, delivery, and cost.* Partner with Product Engineering and cross-functional teams throughout the product
