Job summary

BWX Technologies, Inc. in Jonesborough, TN, is seeking a Manufacturing Operations Supervisor to oversee HPDU processes and coordinate safe, high‑quality metal production. The role requires directing staff, managing schedules, and ensuring compliance with contractual and company standards.

You will drive continuous improvement, manage equipment and tooling, and provide leadership across shifts (1st–3rd) while supporting startup, production, and training needs.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with at least five years of technical experience.
  • Experience in supervisory or first-line leadership in manufacturing or chemical processing preferred.
  • US citizen and ability to obtain security clearance.
  • Willingness to work 1st/2nd/3rd shifts and overtime as needed.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing codes, fluids, safety data sheets and lean/six sigma.
  • Ability to wear a respirator and adhere to safety protocols.

Position Overview:

As a Manufacturing Operations Supervisor at NOGJ in Jonesborough, you will organize and direct manufacturing operations related to HPDU processes at NOGJ. This position will provide technical and production activities and staff, oversee and coordinate the operation of chemical processes and conversion of feed material to manufacture of high purity metal products that conform to contractual and Company requirements for performance, reliability and any special characteristics and conditions that may apply, and analysis, evaluation and solution of technical problems encountered in the application of manufacturing methods, facilities, processes, material and tooling incident to the fabrication and assembly of products while maintaining a safe work environment. This position may require the ability to work a 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift schedule to support facility start up, production and/or training requirements and may require the ability to work overtime, weekends and shifts of 10 to 12 hours per day.

Your Day to Day as Manufacturing Operations Supervisor:
  • Initiates plans and safe processes which minimize manufacturing costs through effective utilization of manpower, equipment, facilities, materials and resources.
  • Manages and oversees chemical and material conversion processes related to high purity metal production.
  • Provides management and oversite for related continuous improvement efforts related to manufacturing processes.
  • Manages and oversees the design, fabrication, modification or systems and equipment required to support manufacturing, quality and test operations.
  • Implements and maintains a cost-effective key performance indicator program.
  • Provides short and long-range training, proficiency, and qualification plans for manufacturing operations and implement approved plans.
  • Ensures activities within defined scope are accomplished safely and in accordance with Company policies, sound business practices and applicable regulations and requirements.
  • Provides effective direction and leadership to subordinates guided by established policies and precedents.
  • Plans, prioritizes and delegates work assignments.
  • Reads and interprets system drawings and operational documents.
  • Reads and interprets related product specifications.
  • Provides technical and administrative guidance for activities in defined scope of responsibilities.
  • Creates and successfully present data and information to management.
  • Effectively utilizes various computer systems to produce schedules, data and reports.
  • Interprets and executes applicable policies and procedures.
  • Schedules and utilizes personnel, material and facilities to ensure that schedules and goals are met.
  • Establishes and maintains a variety of records and reports monitoring internal operating controls.
  • May review designs for quality and design reliability.
  • Inspects and coordinates maintenance of equipment.
  • Selects, appraises, motivates, trains and develops subordinates.
  • Prepares and administers organizational budgets.
  • Provides training in manufacturing techniques, policies and procedures and safety/environmental procedures.
  • Communicates effectively, both written and verbal, with all levels of management and individual contributors and across multiple organizations.
  • Immediately escalates potential safety hazards, safety incidents, issues affecting production schedules, non-conformities and areas of concern to direct manager/supervisor.
  • Works effectively in a team environment.
  • May provide technical and administrative supervision to other operational units.
Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible technical experience in a directly related industry required. Prior supervisory or managerial experience as a first line supervisor or lead person in an industrial, manufacturing or chemical processing environment a plus.
  • NOGJ internal candidates must currently be in a pay grade 06 or 07 classification or higher and have at least five (5) years of experience at a BWXT facility or equivalent experience to be considered for this role.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Applicable codes, rules and regulations in the field of manufacturing, techniques and inspection requirements.
    • Fluid system operations including but not limited to operating and interpreting fluid parameters such as flow, pressure and temperature, operating valves and pumps, and controlling chemical reactor processes.
    • Use of material safety data sheets to understand controls required for hazardous materials.
    • Radiological and chemical handling requirements.
    • Manufacturing processes and methods, Lean, Six Sigma, analytical equipment and other advanced manufacturing methodologies, tools and concepts.
    • Production planning and scheduling of resources, manpower, materials and machines.
    • Principles and practices of personnel management, supervision, leadership, organizational analysis, motivation, team building and conflict resolution.
    • Budgeting procedures and techniques.
    • Applicable computer equipment and software, performance measurement systems and statistical concepts.
  • May be required to wear a respirator in the performance of normal duties and will be required to maintain clean shaven protocol for respirator fit testing.
  • This position may require the ability to work a 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift schedule to support facility start up, production and/or training requirements and may require the ability to work overtime, weekends and shifts of 10 to 12 hours per day.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DOD) and/or Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Pay: $70,000- $103,000

The base salary range for this position in Tennessee (US-TN) at the start of employment is expected to be between $70,000 and $103,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
