Manufacturing Manager – SMT

JOB SUMMARY

The Manufacturing Manager – SMT is responsible for the overall leadership, execution, performance, and continuous improvement of Microboard’s SMT manufacturing operations. This position owns daily, quarterly, and annual outcomes including safety, quality, delivery, productivity, throughput, schedule attainment, labor performance, equipment utilization, WIP, cost, and employee development.

As a highly visible, hands-on leader, this role translates business and production objectives into measurable manufacturing results, establishes clear expectations, creates accountability, removes barriers, and works closely with Planning, Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, Test, and Program Management to consistently deliver against company commitments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

SMT Production Leadership & Daily Execution

  • Daily Operations Ownership:Own daily SMT production performance, review schedules, WIP, staffing, equipment capacity, material availability, and production constraints to ensure target output is met.
  • Floor Presence & Leadership:Maintain a strong floor presence to actively remove obstacles, resolve production issues, and hold supervisors and leads accountable for daily execution.
  • Capacity & Line Optimization:Ensure SMT lines are properly staffed, balanced, and utilized; monitor throughput, downtime, changeovers, labor utilization, and equipment performance.
  • Handoffs & Escalation:Identify schedule risks early to protect customer commitments and ensure smooth handoffs between SMT and downstream operations.

Ownership of Manufacturing Outcomes

  • Daily Ownership:Schedule attainment, output, WIP aging, labor/equipment utilization, quality/scrap/rework control, safety, attendance, and constraint resolution.
  • Quarterly Ownership:Manufacturing KPI achievement, labor efficiency and throughput improvements, defect reduction, WIP/lead-time compression, departmental cost targets, and cross-training execution.
  • Annual Ownership:Strategic SMT manufacturing objectives, operational readiness and capacity planning, capital equipment planning, workforce leadership development, and capability scalability.

Performance Management & Accountability

  • Clear Expectations & KPIs:Establish performance benchmarks and use visual management to communicate priorities and operational gaps.
  • Root-Cause Discipline:Ensure corrective actions are assigned, owned, and completed to prevent recurring problems from becoming accepted operating conditions.
  • Leadership Cultivation:Develop supervisors and leads to independently manage daily production execution and foster a high-accountability culture.

Quality, Process & Continuous Improvement

  • Standards Compliance:Ensure SMT operations strictly follow work instructions, drawings, specifications, customer requirements, and applicable IPC standards.
  • Defect & Scrap Reduction:Partner with Quality and Engineering on root-cause analysis to reduce escapes, defects, rework, and scrap.
  • Lean & Operational Excellence:Drive Lean Manufacturing, 5S/6S, standard work, ESD/FOD compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives across lines.
  • Team Management:Directly lead assigned SMT supervisors, leads, and production staff; coach on problem-solving, quality, discipline, and teamwork.
  • Workforce Capability:Establish cross-training plans, maintain skills matrices, and ensure required safety, IPC, and technical training is completed.
  • Talent Management:Participate in recruiting, onboarding, recognition, and performance management to build a strong pipeline of future manufacturing leaders.

LEADERSHIP EXPECTATIONS

  • Outcome-Driven:Owns operational outcomes rather than simply reporting problems or activity.
  • Data & Visual Management:Uses data, visual management, and KPIs to drive decisions and anticipate constraints.
  • Empowering Leader:Develops people and supervisors rather than becoming the single point of problem-solving.
  • Cross-Functional Partner:Builds effective partnerships with Quality, Engineering, Planning, Supply Chain, and Program Management.

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Experience:7–10 years of progressive manufacturing experience with 3–5 years in manufacturing leadership within high-mix electronics manufacturing (EMS, PCBA, SMT).
  • Education:Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Operations Management, Manufacturing, or Business preferred (or equivalent combination of education and leadership experience).
  • Technical Knowledge:Strong expertise in SMT processes, equipment, production flow, capacity planning, WIP management, and manufacturing constraints.
  • Systems & Tools:Proficiency in ERP/MRP and MES systems (Infor LN, Aegis MES, Power BI preferred) along with MS Excel and Office.
  • Certifications & Skills:Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma training/certification preferred. Strong communication, analytical, and urgency-driven problem-solving skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
