Job summary

Johnson Controls in the United States is seeking a Manufacturing Engineering Manager to lead a team of engineers and technicians in designing tools, controls, equipment, and processes for HVAC fabrication and assembly. A strong Lean/ Six Sigma mindset will guide workstreams and improvements across value streams.

You will drive future-state planning, organize cross-functional collaboration, and develop labor standards and costing while managing budget and performance.

Qualifications

  • University degree in Engineering or related field; BS in Mechanical/Manufacturing/Industrial Engineering preferred.
  • 8 years manufacturing/production ops or manufacturing engineering; 5+ years supervisory experience.
  • Proven track record of project management execution and high performance.
  • Hands-on cost estimating, project management, contract negotiations with vendors.
  • Strong knowledge of Lean layouts and Six Sigma/lean principles.
  • Experience with manufacturing process improvement and production tools.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Manufacturing Engineering to design and develop tools, controls, equipment, and processes for HVAC fabrication and assembly.
  • Develop future state vision and drive implementation plan.
  • Provide direction to technicians and engineers with significant autonomy.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, NPI, and Continuous Improvement teams.
  • Develop labor standards, work instructions, and labor costing.
  • Drive CI savings via workflow enhancements, balanced production lines, 3P Kaizen, and lean waste reduction.

What you will do

This position manages activities and allocates resources within the Manufacturing Engineering Team to develop and meet Divisional, Site, and Value Stream goals. He/she/they will lead a group of Manufacturing Engineers and Technicians to design and develop tools, controls, equipment, and processes to support manufacturing fabrication and assembly operations of commercial HVAC units. A significant portion of the manager’s time is dedicated to team development, performance management, and organizational leadership responsibilities. This person will work closely with the manufacturing operations team with a Lean mindset in developing new production methods, workstream consolidation layouts, and interfacing with the quality control staff to establish standards and resolve manufacturing issues.

  • Position is responsible for managing Manufacturing Engineering personnel and Lean Manufacturing Professionals
  • Develop Future State vision and drive and monitor the implementation plan.
  • Provides direction and guidance to technician and engineering staff who exercise significant latitude and independence in their assignments.
  • Aligns resources and identifies opportunities for improvement within the existing processes and systems.
  • Builds strong relationships and collaborates with cross-functional teams including Operations, Maintenance, Quality, New Product Introduction, Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Team, Supplier Engineering, and Continuous improvement functions.
  • Ensures that inputs from all internal and external customers are understood, plans are appropriately developed and drives accountability and execution to plans.
  • Utilizes excellent communication skills, demonstrating leadership communicating both up and down the organization.
  • Influences, guides, and manages internal/external resources to achieve program goals.
  • Provides significant guidance and approval regarding technical strategies and approaches.
  • Recruits, coaches, and develops organizational talent.
  • Fosters a diverse workplace that enables all participants to contribute to their full potential in pursuit of organizational objectives.
  • Creates an entrepreneurial environment.

  • Strong Capital Planning skills: budget, application and project management.
  • Directs activities of manufacturing engineers in developing labor standards, work instructions, operational description sheets, and labor costing.
  • Responsible for achieving the plant's annual Continuous Improvement (CI) Savings Goal by:
  • Enhancing Workflow (Material Presentation, Material Flow, Support Plan for Every Part)
  • Balancing Production Lines
  • Conducting 3P Kaizen events
  • Adopting a Lean mindset to eliminate waste and reduce controllable conversion costs
What we look for
  • University degree in Engineering or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer or Industrial Engineer or equivalent degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 8 years manufacturing and production operations and/or manufacturing engineering experience including at least 5 years’ successful supervisory/management experience of manufacturing engineers.
  • Demonstrated track record of project management execution and a high-level of performance in current and previous positions.
  • Hands‑on experience in cost estimating, project management, contract negotiations and interaction with product vendors.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with Lean layouts and related flow strategy using six sigma and lean principles.
  • Experience with manufacturing process improvement and production tools.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $100,000 - $150,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, location and alignment with market data.)
