Medtronic in the United States seeks a Manufacturing Controls Engineer II to support both manufacturing and controls engineering activities. This hybrid role aims to improve equipment performance, manufacturing efficiency, product quality, and operational reliability across production lines.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with 2+ years relevant experience or Master's with 0+ years.
  • Experience troubleshooting manufacturing equipment using diagnostic tools and PLC software.
  • Experience with Mitsubishi and Rockwell PLC platforms, including safety PLCs.
  • Experience with HMI, vision inspection, robotics, and motion control systems.
  • Proficiency in NFPA standards and safety compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to maintenance, manufacturing, and operations teams.
  • Address daily manufacturing and equipment issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, control drawings, and documentation.
  • Troubleshoot equipment using PLCs, CNCs, vision systems, robotics, and motion systems.
  • Create/update electrical schematics and BOMs in AutoCAD for equipment.
  • Develop equipment specifications and coordinate vendor quotes and design reviews.
  • Participate in DFMEA/PFMEA and risk assessments to ensure CTQ clarity.
  • Coordinate activities across cross-functional teams and travel up to 5% domestically.

A Day in the Life The Manufacturing Controls Engineer II will support both manufacturing engineering and controls engineering activities to improve equipment performance, manufacturing efficiency, product quality, and operational reliability. This hybrid role combines hands‑on support for production equipment and manufacturing processes with technical expertise in automation, controls, and electrical systems. The ideal candidate will be a proactive problem solver who enjoys working across operations, maintenance, engineering, and supplier teams in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical support to maintenance, manufacturing, and operations teams as needed.
  • Address daily manufacturing and equipment issues and implement corrective actions to support production continuity.
  • Research, develop, design, and test electrical components, equipment, systems, and networks.
  • Troubleshoot machine stoppages and support root cause analysis for manufacturing and equipment-related issues.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, control drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Troubleshoot equipment using a variety of control platforms, including PLCs, CNC systems, PC-based controls, vision systems, robotics, and motion systems.
  • Create and update electrical schematics, component bills of material, and equipment documentation in AutoCAD for legacy and modified equipment.
  • Develop equipment specifications and work with vendors to obtain quotes for automated and manual equipment solutions.
  • Review equipment quotes and participate in design reviews for custom assembly and manufacturing equipment.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), throughput, and equipment reliability.
  • Participate in Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA), Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA), machine risk assessments, and critical-to-quality (CTQ) activities to ensure requirements are clearly defined and documented.
  • Support equipment specification development, supplier selection, and supplier qualification activities.
  • Participate in equipment validation, installation, and commissioning activities.
  • Coordinate and communicate activities across cross‑functional teams within and outside of operations.
  • Travel up to 5 percent domestically to manufacturing sites and supplier locations.
Must Have:
  • Baccalaureate degree and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, or Master’s degree and a minimum of 0 years of relevant experience
Nice to Have:
  • Experience troubleshooting manufacturing equipment using conventional diagnostic tools and PLC software.
  • Experience with PLC platforms such as Mitsubishi and Rockwell, including safety PLCs such as GuardLogix, CompactLogix, and ControlLogix.
  • Experience with HMI, vision inspection, robotics, and motion control systems.
  • Proficiency in electrical and controls design with knowledge of NFPA standards.
  • Ability to verify equipment compliance with NFPA, OSHA, and other applicable safety standards.
  • Experience with automated assembly equipment and machine risk assessment methodologies.
  • For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
