Job summary

Abbott in St. Paul, MN is seeking an Engineering professional to implement and sustain Operational Excellence (OPEX) projects within the Vascular Devices division.

You will determine efficient operation sequences by evaluating human factors, quality control, inventory, and production coordination, applying engineering techniques and data-driven methods.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering or related field.
  • Experience in manufacturing or operations engineering is a plus.
  • Lean Manufacturing and/or Project Management certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement manufacturing solutions to support operations strategies.
  • Analyze facilities layout to improve cycle time and productivity.
  • Perform capacity analyses for headcount and equipment.
  • Provide technical support to other departments on flow and productivity projects.
  • Apply engineering principles to interpret problems and propose solutions.
  • Maintain productivity metrics and participate in cross-functional teams.
  • Identify non-value-added activities and drive continuous improvement using DMAIC.
  • Review BOM and routing to optimize materials and facility utilization.
  • Ensure compliance with Abbott procedures and regulatory requirements.

Opportunity

This position works out of our St. Paul, MN location in the Abbott Vascular Devices division. Abbott Vascular provides innovative, minimally invasive, and cost-effective products for the treatment of vascular disease.

What You’ll Work On

Implements and sustains Operational Excellence (OPEX) initiatives and projects in all plant functions. Determines the most efficient sequence of operations through evaluation of human work factors, quality control, inventory control and production coordination. Establishes methods for maximum utilization of facilities and personnel. Conducts studies to cost control, cost reduction, inventory control and production record systems. Apply scientific, engineering knowledge, mathematics and ingenuity basic engineering assignments.

What You’ll Do
  • Develop manufacturing solutions that support the operations strategic directives through the application of statistical methods and performing mathematical calculations.
  • Work with and maintain a variety of equipment types from handheld measuring tools (i.e. micrometers, calipers, etc.) to large manufacturing equipment (i.e. laser welders, injection molders, etc.)
  • Analyzes, creates and develops facilities layout to support cycle time reduction and productivity improvements. This includes meeting with suppliers or vendors, staff and management personnel regarding purchases, procedures, product specifications, and presenting project status.
  • Perform capacity analysis for headcount and equipment, as well as maintaining labor standard and headcount/ equipment profiles.
  • Offer technical support to other departments in flow, ergonomics and productivity projects.
  • Apply standard engineering principles and methodologies to interpret problems. Create/modify designs. Draw conclusions and recommend options for solutions.
  • Develops and maintains productivity metrics. Participate on cross-functional teams to support organizational goals.
  • Identifies and eliminates non-value added activities using continuous improvement tools and DMAIC methodology.
  • Develop and/or refine manufacturing methods, labor and equipment utilization methods and cost analysis systems to promote efficient staff, materials and facility utilization. This includes analyzing BOM and routing processes focusing on business strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with all Abbott procedures and all applicable regulatory agency requirements.
  • Understand and comply with applicable Quality and EHS Policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

Education Bachelors Degree (± 16 years) Engineering Field (Bachelor Science in Industrial Engineering).

Experience/Background Experience Entry Level- 0-2 years if experiences. Entry level position in which 0-2 years of experiences is typical to meet the skills and responsibilities of the position. Have the ability to do statistical analysis. Lean Manufacturing and/or Project Management certified are a plus. Fully Bilingual (English and Spanish).

Candidate / Incumbents Should Possess the Following
  • ability to form and develop interpersonal, professional relationships; display socially and professionally appropriate behavior.
  • Ability to work independently and in groups; ability to work cross functionally; demonstrated initiate and problem-solving skills, critical thinking and ability or aptitude to use various types of databases and another computers software.
  • Proficiency in PC based tools such as MS Office (Excel, Word, Project and Power Point), AutoCad and general web-based applications.
