Job summary

Heartland Food Products Group in Indianapolis, IN is seeking a Production Engineer to join our team as a hands-on engineer focused on equipment operation, process control, and continuous improvement within the Production Cell. This entry-level role targets May 2027 graduates who will start full-time in June 2027 and work closely with Operations, Quality and Engineering.

You will gain expertise in drives, motors, sensors, pumps and valves while supporting safety, food-grade compliance, and cost

Qualifications

• BS in Engineering is required; Mechanical or Chemical Engineering preferred.
• May consider students graduating in May 2027.
• Experience with people and project management is preferred.
• Experience in a food-grade environment (FDA, GMP, HACCP) with high-speed packaging equipment preferred.
• Experience with equipment installation and automation is a plus.
• Detail-oriented with ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
• Strong coaching and leadership skills for engineering and maintenance staff.
• Solid computer skills; Microsoft Office and CAD programs.

Responsibilities

• Operate the Production Cell with ownership mindset to improve performance, reduce waste, and quality.
• Lead day-to-day operations of the Production Cell.
• Provide feedback on training and certification programs for manufacturing personnel.
• Participate in troubleshooting and problem-solving for equipment, processes, and products.
• Suggest and implement process improvements to reduce costs and enhance quality.
• Ensure safe working environment following safety rules and culture.
• Develop technical understanding of mechanical equipment (drives, motors, sensors, pumps, valves) in manufacturing.
• Support equipment maintenance and ensure OEM specifications are followed.
