Job summary

Thorlabs is seeking an engineer in Londonderry, NH to improve manufacturing processes and support product transitions. This role requires collaboration with R&D and manufacturing teams to ensure quality and efficiency in production.

The ideal candidate has a Bachelor’s in Engineering and at least 2 years of experience, with knowledge in Solidworks, quality tools, and attention to detail.

Job description

This position is responsible for manufacturing process and testing improvements, developing automation technology, increasing efficiency while maintaining quality standards, supporting OEM customers, and facilitating transition of new products to production for the Thorlabs Measurement Systems division. While this position is based in Londonderry, NH, up to 10% of travel may be required to other Thorlabs sites.

Essential Job Functions

but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for identifying problems and providing solutions for manufacturing issues relating to newly released products, and current production work‑flow.
  • Participate in design reviews with R&D department to help identify and discuss proper procedures and potential issues with newly developed products prior to releasing for production.
  • Assist R&D department in new products prototyping and developing test infrastructure.
  • Training and collaboration with production personnel to continue improving on existing manufacturing and testing processes
  • Interface with engineering and manufacturing to ensure transfer to production of new product releases are in accordance with the approved release processes, requirements, and specifications.
  • Work with R&D and application engineers to help verify test specifications and acceptance criteria for released products and identify critical inspection and process metrics.
  • Collaborate with the RMA and service departments to help inspect and disposition customer returns from the field. Identify, and assist in implementing root cause analysis and corrective actions to prevent future failures.
  • Create and maintain manufacturing process documents to reflect current and future conditions.
  • Collaborate with technicians and assembly personnel to make necessary changes or revisions to assembly, test, and alignment procedures for TMS products.
  • Create necessary jigs and fixtures to improve production efficiency or reduce component damage and waste.
  • Assist in completing engineering changes identified through prototype and pilot runs to increase product manufacturability.
  • Help create and maintain production routing steps and timing for newly released, and existing products
  • Assist in Rev Control and documentation verification using Microsoft D365 and Arena modules.

In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:

  • Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

Physical Activities: The employees must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small. As a result, they should have a steady hand and good hand‑eye coordination. Work may be sedentary, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally.

Experience
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a relevant engineering position, or related position in a manufacturing environment.
Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills
  • Basic computer knowledge such as, but not limited to, Solidworks, Microsoft products, and PLM software.
  • Experience with manufacturing, configuration management, and product development in an R&D / New product development environment.
  • Understanding of GD&T, DFM and DFT, and six sigma practices.
  • Experience with quality improvement tools and techniques (i.e., Failure Mode & Effects Analysis).
  • Strong ability to work well in a group atmosphere and comply with high quality standards.
  • Experience using standard measurement equipment (oscilloscopes, volt meters, calipers, micrometers, pin and thread gauges…. etc.)
  • Comfortable with basic programming and scripting
  • Ability to read and create system drawing and schematics
  • Experience with mechatronics, robotics, optics or other hybrid electro‑mechanical systems.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Annual salary range for this position is $71,000 - $94,000 depending on experience
