Job description

About fab2

The fab2 team can build anything. We design all the hardware and software needed to make chips and we make the fabs, tools, and components ourselves. We're looking for exceptional, hands-on people who can iterate to the limits of what's possible.

fab2 was founded by Sam Zeloof and Jim Keller. Sam is best known for making chips in his garage, and Jim has been a leader in the semiconductor industry for the past 40 years.

About the team

The fab2 production team manufactures chip fabs. From deposition and etching tools to lithography and metrology, we are building every tool ourselves. We fabricate the metal parts, operate SMT lines to build PCBAs, and assemble the tools in-house.

About the Role

At fab2 we design and build everything ourselves, from chambers, gas lines, and valves to etch, deposition, and lithography tools to complete fabs. As a Manufacturing Engineer, you will build everything needed to make a chip. The role links development and production, shaping designs for manufacturability and developing the processes, fixtures, and work instructions that build current and next-generation tools.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, document, and qualify assembly processes for components, tools, and fabs.
  • Design and build cleanroom workstations and cells that reconfigure as designs change.
  • Design fixtures, jigs, and assembly aids, and make them in-house using our machine shop, 3D printers, and laser cutters.
  • Write work instructions and travelers from CAD models, drawings, and BOMs.
  • Build first units of tools to work out the process before handing it to production.
  • Find and fix the root cause of build defects and test failures.
  • Shape designs for manufacturability and flag gaps between as-designed and as-built.
  • Select, qualify, and maintain production equipment such as torque tools, solder stations, and test fixtures.
  • Support bring-up and installation of tools and fabs.
  • Train technicians and ramp builds from first article to repeatable production.
Required Experience
  • 3+ years developing assembly processes for electro-mechanical systems.
  • Track record designing fixtures, tooling, and workstations, and writing work instructions technicians use.
  • Hands‑on experience assembling, soldering, and testing builds to develop the process.
  • Fluency in CAD models, drawings, and BOMs.
Nice-to-have
  • Experience with cleanroom assembly.
  • Familiarity with ERP/MES systems.
