Job summary

Intuitive Surgical, Sunnyvale, seeks a Managing Staff Software Development Engineer to lead a team designing software for electrosurgical systems. You will drive embedded software development across bare‑metal and Linux platforms, including C++, Verilog, and Python, with real‑time data handling and energy analysis.

You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, perform hardware bring‑up, and apply control theory to tune systems for precision in robotic and minimally invasive devices.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 12 years of relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years of experience and a Master’s degree; or equivalent experience.
• Experience designing complete software solutions for embedded systems using C/C++ on bare‑metal and Linux based embedded systems.
• Working knowledge of peripherals used on embedded systems (ADC/DAC, PWM, waveform generation, I2C, SPI, RS232, CAN).
• Hands‑on hardware bring‑up with bench equipment such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
• Strong knowledge of control theory and experience tuning control systems.
• Experience in the medical device industry; familiarity with 60601 and 62304 is strongly preferred.

Primary Function of the Position

The Managing Staff Software Development Engineer brings a key contribution to a team responsible for the architectural design and implementation of software to support novel electrosurgical systems for surgery being developed by the Sunnyvale Engineering group.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Lead a small team through the technical development of embedded software for electrosurgical devices.
• Develop software applications for electrosurgical and robotic products for minimally invasive surgery.
• Develop software and firmware in object-oriented C++, C, Verilog and Python for embedded systems.
• Develop software to acquire, process, store, and analyze energy data in real-time.
• Develop software to support manufacturing and test teams.
• Collaborate in a multidisciplinary team.
• Independently solve assigned problems.

Required Education, Skills & Experience

• Minimum of 12 years of relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years of experience and a Master’s degree; or equivalent experience
• Experience designing complete software solutions for embedded systems using C/C++ language on bare-metal and Linux based embedded systems
• Working knowledge of peripherals commonly used on embedded systems such as ADCs, DACs, PWM and waveform generation and serial communications (I2C, SPI, RS232, CAN)
• Proven experience with hands‑on hardware bring‑up and collaboration, utilizing electronic bench equipment such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers
• Strong knowledge of control theory and experience developing and tuning control systems
• Experience in the medical device industry, familiarity with standards 60601 and 62304 is strongly preferred
