Toyota’s Legal Department is seeking a Managing Counsel for Labor & Employment to provide strategic advice and litigation management for U.S.-based business units. The role reports to the Vice President-Assistant General Counsel for Labor & Employment and supports best-in-class guidance to help the business achieve its goals.

The successful candidate will have JD from an ABA-accredited school, admission to a U.S.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
• Admission to a U.S. state bar, in good standing.
• Substantial experience at a major law firm and/or Fortune 500 corporate law department handling complex labor and employment issues.
• Litigation management experience including discovery, settlements, mediations, arbitrations, and trials.
• Executive-level communications skills and ability to travel about 15%.

Responsibilities

• Provide labor and employment counsel and strategy for U.S.-based team members.
• Manage litigation and arbitration matters and draft settlements.
• Represent the Company in mediations and with administrative agencies (EEOC, DOL, OSHA).
• Advise management on risk related to personnel decisions and regulatory developments.
• Supervise outside counsel and coordinate with HQ on policy and training.
• Train field and HQ personnel on relevant legal issues.

Who we’re looking for

Toyota’sLegal Department is looking for a passionate, highly motivated, business-minded lawyer to join our Labor & Employment Advocacy & Partnership group as Managing Counsel, Labor & Employment.

The primary responsibility of this role is to provide labor and employment advice and counsel and litigation management for a designated set of Toyota business units.

Reporting to the Vice President-Assistant General Counsel for Labor & Employment, the person in this role will support the Legal department's objective to provide best-in-class strategic advice and support to help the business achieve its goals.

This position is based in Plano, Texas. The selected candidate will be expected to reside within commutable distance of this location.

What you’ll be doing

• Provide timely, ongoing, on-demand legal counsel and strategic guidance on the full gamut of employment and labor legal issues impacting U.S.-based team members.
• Represent the Company in the mediation of employment disputes.
• Represent the Company in dealings with administrative agencies that regulate the work environment, including the EEOC and its state-level equivalents, DOL, OSHA, etc.
• Research, monitor and analyze labor and employment laws and regulations and advise relevant management of the degree of risk associated with personnel decisions, proposed initiatives, corporate activities, and industry and legal developments.
• Evaluate and provide tactical and strategic advice and manage litigation and arbitrations arising out of employment disputes and related matters; negotiate and draft settlements and other resolution documents.
• Supervise and direct outside counsel in litigated and non-litigated matters.
• Train field and HQ personnel on relevant legal issues.

What you bring

• A Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
• Admission to a U.S. state bar, in good standing.
• Substantial relevant experience gained at a major law firm and/or in a Fortune 500 level corporate law department handling complex employment and labor issues and disputes.
• Litigation management experience, including experience in the development of case and litigation strategies, discovery strategy, trial preparation, settlement negotiations, mediations, arbitrations, and trials.
• Proven experience advising business clients at all levels.
• Executive-level communications skills.
• Ability and willingness to travel 15% of the time.

• Significant experience supporting hourly work environments, such as plants, warehouses, or docks.
• Solid understanding of California employment law.
• Experience handling novel, non-traditional, or emerging legal issues.
