Job summary

Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP is seeking a Managing Clerk to support litigation docketing across the firm's practice groups and attorneys.

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Legal Practice Support – Operations, the role requires a Bachelor's degree and at least five years of related experience, with strong familiarity with PACER, NYSCEF, CourtAlert.com, and calendar software. You will manage docket entries, monitor deadlines, and liaise with court personnel.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university and minimum five years of related experience.
  • Effectively communicate and present information to attorneys and staff.
  • Proficient in searching court databases (PACER, NYSCEF, CourtAlert.com, Bloomberg).
  • Hands-on experience with rules-based calendaring software (CompuLaw or ProLaw).
  • Familiarity with federal, state and local court systems and electronic filing (PACER, NYSCEF).
  • Notary preferred; arrange for legalization of documents as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain litigation docket and ensure accurate deadlines.

  • Coordinate outside legal services and manage filings.

Job description

Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP is hiring a Managing Clerk who will support litigation docketing and related activities. Reporting to the Senior Manager of Legal Practice Support – Operations, the Managing Clerk supports the Firm’s multiple litigation-facing practice groups and attorneys on federal, state, and local court customs, procedural issues, and practical aspects of pending cases.

Primary Functions and Responsibilities
  • Maintain litigation docket.
  • Ensure compliance and record all incoming and outgoing documents in the docket database and accurately calculate and record procedural deadlines and due dates.
  • Advise attorneys on state, local, and federal court rules, including court practices.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of Firmwide Litigation Docketing system maintenance policies and best practices.
  • Manage and coordinate legal services required outside the firm, such as service of process, retrieval of documents, etc.
  • Program, run, print, and deliver docket reports and ad hoc reports to attorneys, legal secretaries, and legal staff.
  • Monitor cases in state and federal courts, government and administrative agencies on all active matters; monitor actions in computerized databases, including, but not limited to eTracks and Courtalert.com.
  • Obtain decisions and orders, obtain docket updates and communicate case status changes to responsible attorneys.
  • Verify docket database accuracy through spot checks, verification of docket entries from incoming mail and by other means.
  • Responsible for electronic filings in assigned courts and keep up to date on all filing rules, procedures, and judge's individual practices.
  • Manage all case‑specific information in the responsible jurisdictions.
  • Act as liaison with court personnel and establish and maintain good working relations with court personnel, including process servers and couriers.
  • Respond to procedural inquiries and questions, including court research at the direction of attorneys, paralegals and business services colleagues.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Litigation Docketing procedures and training of Litigation Docket clerks and specialists.
  • Assist in the recruiting process for new Litigation Docket clerks and specialists, including interviewing and new‑hire training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience & Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four‑year college or university; minimum five (5) years of related experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Effectively communicate and present information, and respond to procedural inquiries and questions from attorneys and staff.
  • Proficient in searching and retrieving information from court‑related databases (e.g., PACER, NYSCEF, CourtAlert.com, Bloomberg) and other online sources of case information.
  • Hands‑on experience with rules‑based calendaring software (e.g., CompuLaw or ProLaw).
  • Highly familiar with litigation practice and able to quickly and accurately determine which filings and documents trigger future deadlines.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with federal, state and local court systems, including electronic filing systems (e.g., PACER, NYSCEF).
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Manhattan and NewYork Civil Practice Law & Rules and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.
  • Obtain certificates of good standing for attorneys from various jurisdictions.
  • Notary preferred. Arrange for legalization of documents for use in foreign countries.
  • Maintain a database of commonly used forms and precedents.
  • Assist attorneys with administration of their PACER and NYSCEF accounts.

Benefits & Salary

For positions in New York, NY, the salary range for this position is: $106,600.00 - $170,500.00.
