Job summary

State of Missouri seeks a Managing Attorney to oversee the Kansas City and Western Region Litigation Unit in Missouri. The role will supervise staff attorneys and contract attorneys, distribute caseloads, manage data, and provide legal guidance to DSS divisions in the region, including opportunities for leadership across circuits.

The Division of Legal Services (DLS) has an opening for a Managing Attorney within the Kansas City and Western Region Litigation Unit located in Kansas City, Missouri.

Job Location:

This position will be located at Teasdale State Office Building, 8800 E. 63rd Street, Raytown, MO 64133; and will assist in the management of legal services in the Kansas City Metro (circuit 16) and surrounding circuits, to include; circuits 3,4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 15, 17, 27, and 43. Some travel is required. All internal promotional applicants are encouraged to apply as there may be alternate office space available.

As Managing Attorney, you will provide assistance to the Senior Managing Attorney in the supervision of full-time staff attorneys and contract attorneys within the region who provide legal support and advice to DSS and its divisions including Children’s Division, Family Support Division, and the Division of Youth Services. You will be responsible for assisting the Senior Managing Attorney in the distribution of caseloads, data management, technical support to attorneys, recruitment and retention of attorneys, and operations of the office and other managerial duties as assigned. You will work with other DSS team members and stakeholders to provide resolutions to difficult issues.

You must be well-organized, able to perform case analyses, spot issues, and be proficient with time management.

Minimum Qualifications

A juris doctor from an accredited institution and membership in good standing with the Missouri Bar. Three or more years’ litigation experience, including bench or jury trials. Excellent research and writing skills are required. Effective critical thinking, time management, and organizational skills are required. Mastery of technical foundational legal knowledge and skills, such as the Missouri Rules of Civil Procedure and Evidence, are required. A background in juvenile, family, and administrative law are preferred but not required.

Pursuant to State Law, this position requires accreditation, licensure, and/or professional license which is only available to holders of specific post-secondary degrees.
