At Second Helpings, we envision a community where everyone has enough nourishing food and ample opportunities to thrive. Our mission is to address hunger today and build self-sufficiency to prevent hunger tomorrow.

Founded in 1998 by three chefs, Second Helpings remains true to its core mission while the ability to serve our community has continued to grow. To date we have rescued nearly 55 million pounds of food and distributed nearly 21 million meals through our 200 + area partners.

The Second Helpings building is a vibrant and active one, fostering a collaborative work environment. The organization relies on a steady and dedicated volunteer corps that is in the building during most open hours, and it sees present and former culinary job training students coming and going regularly. Food and food culture are ever-present.

JOB SUMMARY

Manage the Second Helpings volunteer program which includes recruiting, screening, selecting, and training volunteers. Function as the primary liaison to volunteers. Develop, implement and document all procedures and policies relating to the volunteer program. Collaborate with staff, committee members, and volunteers to best meet organizational needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

include the following.

  • Plan and implement recruitment, training, and retention strategies for volunteers.
  • Provide leadership, professional development, and oversight to the Volunteer Services Coordinator.
  • Research and improve, where appropriate, means to enhance the volunteer experience with Second Helpings including training, registration, mobile app, and group sign-ups.
  • Design volunteer schedules to meet the needs of Second Helpings' programs, in close collaboration with program leadership. Use applications, references, and personal interviews to effectively place volunteers in meaningful positions.
  • Keep neat, accurate records and files of the volunteer program, including hours contributed, shifts filled, and retention. Ensure that community service and court ordered volunteer records are kept up to date and reported to the proper agencies.
  • Coordinate and conduct orientation (both in person and virtual) for all new volunteers, including sanitation training, volunteer rights and responsibilities, and reviewing job descriptions. Plan, implement, and oversee necessary or opportunistic training for volunteers.
  • Communicate regularly with volunteers verbally, through data base postings, monthly newsletters, e-mail, and postings in the building.
  • Use a variety of recognition forms to meet the needs of volunteers, including plaques, written features, community/corporate programs, giveaways, surveys, advancement opportunities, etc.
  • Recommend budget needs and monitor expenses of approved budget.
  • Create procedure manuals for volunteer program and keep updated.
  • Order volunteer supplies, uniforms, and recognition items as needed.
  • Provide assistance in other areas as requested and when time permits.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • One to three years management and/or supervisory experience required.
  • Degree in related field preferred.
  • Prior experience as a volunteer and demonstrated community involvement required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
  • Understand basic volunteer motivation and management.
  • Possess an excellent memory (especially names) and a high degree of patience.
  • Adept at relationship building, both internally and externally.
  • Strong computer skills with experience in database management, word processing, and creating HTLM documents.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication as well as organizational skills.
  • Must be detail oriented and have the ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Able to understand instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Regularly required to stand for long periods of time; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, with assistance if needed.
  • Vision (with correction if necessary) capabilities include close and distance, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Exposure to wet, humid and/or extreme heat conditions.
  • Occasional exposure to fumes, flame, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, risk of electric shock, and moderate to high noise levels.
