Engineering Manager – PlayStation Portal Platform

Sony Interactive Entertainment is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead Platform Quality, Operational Excellence, and Engineering Productivity initiatives for PlayStation Portal based on AOSP.

This role is responsible for driving Platform Performance, Stability, Security, and Observability through data‑driven engineering practices, automation, telemetry, and cross‑functional collaboration across Platform, QE, Security, Infrastructure, and Product teams.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical leadership with exceptional people management skills and a passion for building highly reliable consumer products at scale. You will lead a team of experienced engineers while driving execution and continuous improvement of the PlayStation Portal platform used by millions of players worldwide.

Responsibilities

Lead, mentor, and grow a team of experienced software engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, ownership, collaboration, and innovation.

Provide coaching, career development, performance management, and continuous feedback to support individual and team success.

Establish clear goals, expectations, and growth opportunities while ensuring team members feel valued, empowered, and heard.

Drive talent development, succession planning, and hiring efforts to build and maintain a high‑performing engineering team.

Platform Performance & Stability
  • Lead initiatives to improve Performance, Stability, Scalability, and overall reliability of the PlayStation Portal platform.
  • Define and drive Platform Health KPIs and Operational Excellence objectives.
  • Identify bottlenecks and systemic issues through profiling, telemetry, benchmarking, and large‑scale data analysis.
  • Drive root‑cause analysis and long‑term corrective actions for platform issues.
  • Establish measurable quality targets and continuously improve platform health and user experience.
  • Design and implement telemetry, logging, observability, and monitoring systems across the platform stack.
  • Establish data‑driven methodologies to continuously measure, analyze, and improve platform quality.
  • Build scalable data collection and analytics pipelines to generate actionable insights from devices, test environments, and CI/CD systems.
  • Enable engineering teams to make informed decisions through platform analytics, dashboards, and operational metrics.
Quality Engineering & Automation
  • Partner closely with QE teams to define measurable KPIs for Performance, Stability, Reliability, and Quality.
  • Integrate automated measurements, benchmarking, and validation into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Lead automation efforts for regression detection, performance monitoring, and platform health assessment.
  • Improve engineering productivity through continuous testing, automated quality gates, and development workflow optimization.
  • Drive adoption of engineering best practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
Security Collaboration
  • Collaborate with Security teams to identify platform security risks, vulnerabilities, and mitigation strategies.
  • Drive implementation and tracking of security improvements across the platform stack.
  • Establish proactive monitoring and reporting mechanisms for security‑related issues.
  • Support secure platform architecture, threat mitigation, and security best practices throughout the software lifecycle.
  • Build and maintain dashboards that provide real‑time visibility into platform health, quality, performance, and operational metrics.
  • Enable engineering and leadership teams to continuously monitor platform status and trends.
  • Improve transparency and operational awareness through intuitive reporting and visualization tools.
  • Establish reporting mechanisms for platform health and quality indicators.
Technical Program Leadership
  • Lead large‑scale technical initiatives from requirements definition and architecture through implementation, launch, and post‑launch support.
  • Coordinate execution across multiple teams while balancing technical excellence, business priorities, and delivery commitments.
  • Drive predictable execution through Agile methodologies, effective planning, risk management, and stakeholder alignment.
  • Contribute to technical roadmap planning and strategic platform initiatives.
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7+ years of experience delivering technologies in the interactive entertainment industry, computer graphics, SDKs, frameworks, Android applications, mobile game development, or related fields.
  • Experience managing software engineering teams delivering large‑scale platform, system software, mobile, or consumer products.
  • Strong understanding of Android/AOSP platform architecture and system‑level software development.
  • Proficiency in Android development using Java, Kotlin, and Android Studio.
  • Strong understanding of mobile architectures, Android ecosystems, development trends, and emerging technologies.
  • Experience with Performance Optimization, Stability Analysis, Reliability Engineering, and Production Debugging.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, measure, and optimize UI and application performance, including UI responsiveness, startup performance, rendering performance, and efficient network utilization.
  • Experience building telemetry, observability, logging, monitoring, analytics, or diagnostics systems.
  • Experience with CI/CD systems, automated testing infrastructure, and engineering productivity tooling.
  • Experience developing multi‑threaded applications with strong understanding of concurrency, synchronization, and performance optimization.
  • Excellent people management skills, including goal setting, performance reviews, coaching, mentoring, organizational planning, and talent development.
  • Proven experience fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and high‑performing engineering culture.
  • Strong project management skills with experience prioritizing work, managing resources, mitigating risks, and delivering projects on schedule.
  • Proven experience with Agile development methodologies, including Scrum and iterative development practices.
  • Experience taking products or platforms from requirements definition through global launch and live operation.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to build strong partnerships across engineering, product, QE, security, and leadership organizations.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills, with the ability to communicate designs, implementation details, architecture decisions, and testing strategies across global teams.
  • Strong advocacy for personal and professional growth, ensuring every team member feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed.
  • A proactive, adaptable leadership style with a deep commitment to team success and organizational excellence.

  • Experience developing consumer electronics, gaming devices, handheld devices, or embedded systems.

Compensation

Estimated base pay range: $201,400 - $302,000 USD.

At SIE, we consider several factors when setting each role’s base pay range, including the competitive benchmarking data for the market and geographic location. In addition, this role is eligible for SIE’s top‑tier benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, matching 401(k), paid time off, wellness program, and employee discounts for Sony products. This role may also be eligible for a bonus package.
