Job summary

Amazon in Palo Alto is seeking a Senior Manager to lead the Search Capacity team, guiding BI engineers, data scientists, and program managers to scale the Search service while controlling costs.

You will own capacity planning, KPI tracking, and hardware budgeting, developing automation tools and models to meet current and future SLAs. A strong leadership record and AWS data stack experience are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics or equivalent, or 2+ years in a quantitative field like statistics, data science, economics, or engineering.
  • 3+ years of people management and team development experience.
  • Experience in scripting for automation (e.g. Python) and advanced SQL skills.
  • Experience with data visualization tools like Tableau or Quicksight.
  • Experience in leading large, complex initiatives and delivering critical solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of BI engineers, data scientists, and program managers.
  • Scale the Amazon Search service through cross-team collaboration and capacity planning.

The Amazon Search team creates customer-focused search solutions and technologies. Whenever a customer visits an Amazon site worldwide and types in a query or browses through product categories, Amazon Search service go to work. We design, develop, and deploy high performance, fault-tolerant, distributed search systems used by millions of Amazon customers every day.

Key job responsibilities

As the manager of the Search Capacity team, you will lead a team of talented business intelligence engineers, data scientists, and technical program mangers with the following responsibilities.

  • Scale the Amazon Search service by working closely with service owners in engineering and operations to understand the service in depth and drive optimal scaling and computational capacity planning.
  • Identify and track key performance metrics around efficiency and costs.
  • Manage planning, ordering, and budgeting for hardware and other computational resources.
  • Develop and improve tools for automating the foregoing responsibilities wherever possible.
  • Analyze resource utilization and performance test data to identify variables impacting performance and scalability. Develop models for required hardware resources to meet current and future SLAs.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or above in computer science, engineering, mathematics or equivalent, or Bachelor's degree or equivalent and 2+ years of a quantitative field such as statistics, mathematics, data science, business analytics, economics, finance, engineering, or computer science experience
  • 3+ years of people management and team development experience
  • Experience in scripting for automation (e.g. Python) and advanced SQL skills.
  • Experience with data visualization using Tableau, Quicksight, or similar tools
  • Experience in technical leadership of large, complex initiatives, and delivering critical solutions, significant improvements, or new mechanisms
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics or equivalent, or Master's degree or above in business administration, finance, economics, computer science, data science, engineering, or other related field
  • Experience with AWS solutions such as EC2, DynamoDB, S3, and Redshift
  • Experience in data science, business analytics, business intelligence, or similar experience in big data environments
  • Experience analyzing metrics to drive business improvements

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
