Job summary

City Utilities of Springfield is seeking an experienced Director of Power Generation to manage operations for a multi‑unit steam and combustion turbine facility. You will lead on‑site staff, coordinate with maintenance, engineering, and project teams, and ensure safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.

Ideal candidates have 10+ years in power production, 5+ years in supervision, and a strong background in budgeting and cross‑department collaboration.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, or other applicable curriculum from an accredited college or university is required.
  • An advanced degree in Business, Engineering, or Management is preferred.
  • Significant experience with the operations of steam, combustion turbines, and power generation facilities is required.
  • Ten or more years' recent progressively responsible experience in the power production field or related industrial field is required.
  • At least five years' recent supervisory experience is required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license (minimum Class F).

Coordinates operations schedules and availability with power system control and power marketing as necessary to meet inter and intra departmental objectives. Is responsible for the overall activities and actions of the on-site operations staff, and all day-to-day plant operational functions.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:1. Responsible for all Operations and Planning activities incumbent to a multi-unit power generation station.2. Promotes, directs, coordinates, trains, and supervises personnel in the safe and efficient operation of a multi-unit, multi-fuel, steam, and combustion turbine power station(s). Works as a team with all departments to ensure the plant stays synchronized.3. Works collaboratively with multiple departments across the organization to ensure efficient completion of maintenance activities, while supporting ongoing production needs.4. Responsible for the safe and reliable operation of all station equipment. Responsible for making decisions that keep generating assets available and reliable.5. Directs personnel in data collection, data submittal, and implementation of processes in support of environmental compliance efforts.6. Directs, plans, and coordinates operational activities in support of testing and results oriented projects.7 Assures adherence to Utility policy, procedures, department directives, EPA/MDNR Emission permits, NERC/FERC and other compliance regulations, safety operating rules, and non-discrimination.8. Evaluates operational situations and needs. Participates in planning. Sets priorities and works toward goals to work safely, increase reliability and efficiency, and minimize costs.9. Prepares and administers multi-million dollar operating budget for Operations and assist with the overall plant budget. Provides long range planning vision and forecast.10. Proactively manages subordinate teams that include the following areas: Operations Supervisors, Staff Supervisors.11. Works in strong partnership with the Maintenance Manager, Engineering Manager, and Project Managers to maintain cohesive and coordinated plant operations.12. Performs other related duties as required or assigned by management.QUALIFICATIONS:Education and Experience:Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, or other applicable curriculum from an accredited college or university is required.An advanced degree in Business, Engineering, or Management is preferred.Exceptional experience may be considered in lieu of college degree on a year-for-year basis .Significant experience with the operations of steam, combustion turbines, and power generation facilities is required.Ten or more years' recent progressively responsible experience in the power production field or related industrial field is required.At least five years' recent supervisory experience is required.Licensing/Certification:Must have a valid driver’s license (minimum Class F).Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Thorough working knowledge of:Combustion turbine and steam power generating station and be able to plan and coordinate the operations function of the station.Management techniques and practices.Ability to:Stay current with rapidly changing technological and regulatory advancements and provide direction as to their implementation.Engage subordinates in strategic plans and delegate activities effectively and efficiently.Demonstrate positive behavior including the ability to respond positively to communications from others, support ideas, and communicate clearly.Build positive relationships.Handle sensitive and personnel issues in a highly confidential and professional manner.Be skilled in oral and written communications.Make independent, rapid, and mature decisions while working collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.Must be capable of making fair and impartial decisions.Handle personnel issues in a professional manner.Rapidly analyze and resolve problems.Have ownership and accountability for all assets assigned within Power Generation.Meet deadlines and schedule work for a timely completion.Analytical ability to work within the constraints of a budget.Effectively utilize a range of digital tools and platforms, including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, enterprise software, artificial intelligence-enhanced applications, and self-service systems. Must possess a willingness and capacity to learn and adapt to emerging technologies, including mobile devices, cloud-based systems, and data-driven platforms relevant to utility operations.Encourage and promote supervisors to educate and develop their teams through accountability and training.Ensure EEO compliance according to CU’s policy 2.29 as well as all other company policies.Physical Requirements:Typically, sedentary work. Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and receive detailed information through oral communication. Substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, and close visual acuity to operate a computer is required. Pushing, pulling, stooping, lifting 25 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally and working at heights is required.Working Conditions:Normal office and power station environment with the inherent noise and heat of large machinery and fugitive dust and fumes from the coal fuel.In order to successfully supervise subordinate employees, the work may be inside or outside of plant buildings in all types of weather as required.Work at heights on plant structures will sometimes be required.May work in proximity to toxic and corrosive chemicals.Will be required to work any and all shifts to ensure proper power station operation.May have duty call on a rotation basis.Miscellaneous Requirements:Employee must remain alert and aware of their surroundings at all times and maintain the ability to respond to changing circumstances in a timely manner.Must be able to work successfully with diverse groups of people.Required to wear uniform clothing provided by City Utilities, including flame retardant/arc rated clothing.
