Job summary

Macy’s is hiring a Manager of Operations to drive efficient store performance, profitability, and omni-channel goals. You will oversee payroll, merchandise flow, shortages, staffing, and store safety, reporting to the Director of Stores Operations.

You will lead an experienced team, implement safety programs, and foster an inclusive, high-performing culture while aligning with company objectives and customer service excellence.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required; 3–5 years of prior retail management experience preferred.
  • Ability to manage payroll and store expenses with focus on EBIT% and budget adherence.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills to guide a large operations team.

Responsibilities

  • Manage payroll and non-payroll expenses to optimize EBIT%.
  • Direct receiving and processing of merchandise receipts; maintain back-of-house standards.
  • Analyze shortages and lead reduction initiatives with Asset Protection.
  • Train and develop the operations team to maximize potential and business opportunities.
  • Communicate store objectives clearly to Leaders and Colleagues.
  • Oversee store maintenance to ensure a safe, clean environment for customers and staff.
  • Manage supply budgets and stocking of selling supplies.
  • Lead shortage and safety programs and recruit qualified staff.
  • Create an inclusive environment with strong customer service focus.
  • Address colleague concerns per Company values and conduct performance reviews.

Job Overview

The Manager, Operations ensures efficient operations and achieves profitability and omni-channel goals. They oversee expense management, shortage prevention, staffing and scheduling, merchandise flow, customer service, and housekeeping and safety standards. Reporting directly to the Director, Stores Operations, this role provides a career path in Regional Operations, Asset Protection, or Store Management.

What You Will Do
  • Manage payroll and non-payroll expenses, directly responsible for EBIT%.
  • Direct receiving and processing of all merchandise receipts; ensure back-of-house standards are maintained.
  • Analyze store shortages and implement reduction initiatives in partnership with the Asset Protection Manager.
  • Ensure thorough understanding of procedures, policies, exposure standards, and shortage awareness by the store team, including all People Leaders and Colleagues.
  • Train, motivate, and develop the operations team to maximize their potential and business opportunities.
  • Clearly communicate store and Company objectives to ensure both People Leaders and Colleagues are well-informed.
  • Oversee total store maintenance to create a safe and clean environment for customers and colleagues.
  • Manage supply budgets and ensure the store remains stocked with selling supplies and other required items.
  • Initiate and implement shortage and safety programs.
  • Recruit and select qualified support Colleagues.
  • Create a positive, inclusive work environment focusing on internal and external customer service and safety.
  • Address Colleague concerns fairly and reasonably, consistent with Company values.
  • Monitor and address performance issues promptly; administer reviews and check-ins.
  • Utilize the check-in process as a tool for colleague talent development, promotion, and advancement.
  • Lead Colleagues in support of community service opportunities.
  • Drive overall Store Scorecard results by focusing on tactics such as shopping environment, pricing and signing, workload planning, staffing and weekend compliance, logistics, shortage, and safety.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
Skills You Will Need

Leadership and Team Management: Strong leadership profile with the ability to inspire, motivate, and build effective teams.

Financial Acumen: Experience in managing payroll and non-payroll expenses with direct responsibility for EBIT%.

Operational Expertise: Proficiency in overseeing merchandise receipt processing and maintaining back-of-house standards.

Training and Development: Skills in training, motivating, and developing team members to maximize potential and business opportunities.

Communication: Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills for various situations.

Problem‑Solving and Decision‑Making: Ability to address Colleague concerns fairly and effectively manage time and priorities.

Strategic Planning and Execution: Ability to plan and execute strategies to drive overall Store Scorecard results.

Negotiation Skills: Excellent negotiation skills to ensure the best outcomes for the store and Company.

Who You Are
  • Candidates with a High School diploma or equivalent are encouraged to apply. 3-5 years of prior management experience, preferably in a retail environment.
  • This position requires heavy lifting, constant moving, standing, and reaching with arms and hands. Involves standing for at least two consecutive hours, lifting at least 30 lbs. stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing ladders. May involve reaching above eye level. Requires close vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on department and company needs.
