The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Neurological Surgery has an exciting opportunity for a full time, hybrid Nursing Manager in Miami, FL. The Manager, Nursing promotes and restores patients' health by developing day-to-day management and long-term planning of the patient care area, directing and developing staff, collaborating with physicians and multi-disciplinary professional staffs, and providing physical and psychological support for patients and their friends and families. This employee enforces professional staff behaviors that facilitate positive relationships among colleagues, physicians, administrators, and other hospital personnel.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Oversees patient flow through designated clinical areas.

2. Maintains nursing guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures.

3. Maintains nursing operations by initiating, coordinating, and enforcing program, operational, and personnel policies and procedures.

4. Assures quality of care by developing and interpreting hospital and nursing division's philosophies and standards of care, enforcing adherence to state board of nursing and state nurse practice act requirements, and to other governing agency regulations, and measuring health outcomes against standards.

5. Maintains nursing staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training nurses and auxiliary staff.

6. Completes patient care requirements by assigning nursing and staff.

7. Maintains nursing staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees.

8. Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients and their friends and families. 9. Promotes patients’ independence by establishing patient care goals, teaching and counseling patients, and reinforcing patients’ understanding of disease, medications, and self-care.

10. Resolves patient needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies.

11. Maintains a safe and clean working environment by designing and implementing related procedures, rules, and regulations.

12. Accounts for the collection of data to ensure performance improvement and optimal customer service standards.

13. Assures all staff meet mandatory continuing education requirements and yearly hospital-based competencies.

14. Provides insight on the unit(s) operations to nursing leadership to assist in the development of strategic planning and departmental expansion.

15. Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures. Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Oversees the office-based nursing team for the Department of Neurological surgery, who provide patient care exclusively over the phone and through Epic
  • Acts as a subject matter expert in clinical care and patient escalations
  • Adept at navigating Epic
  • Works closely with the department’s other administrative and clinical teams to ensure effective processes are in place to resolve patient issues and progress care
  • Trains new team members in both clinical knowledge and process workflows
  • Manages efficiency and productivity on the NICE (computer-based phone) system; ensuring nursing team responds in a timely manner to incoming and outgoing phone calls
  • Reports on monthly volume of phone calls and addresses productivity as needed
  • Ensures RN InBasket messages and clinical results are reviewed and managed according to departmental and University protocols, including appropriate provider notification, follow-up, documentation, and escalation when indicated.
  • Oversees processes for obtaining and coordinating review of outside medical records, diagnostic imaging, operative reports, and other clinical information required for neurosurgical evaluation and ongoing patient care.
  • Oversees the core functions of the team including: patient triage, symptomatic assessments, reporting incidental findings and completion of letters and forms
  • Oversees nursing coordination of preoperative and postoperative neurosurgical care, including patient education, clinical assessment, follow-up, and communication with providers
  • Conducts frequent team meetings to share best practices, communicate updates to processes and troubleshoot issues as they arise
  • Develops and ensures adherence to policies related to remote or hybrid work schedules
  • Manages all scheduling requests for the team including time off, sick time and coverage; develops and communicates a monthly schedule
  • Participates in monthly management meeting and semi-annual departmental townhalls, sharing relevant content and presenting as required
  • Liaises with central nursing teams and ensures educational and team-building opportunities are shared with the office-based teams
