Job summary

Coupang in Mountain View is seeking a Manager - Mobile Engineering to lead the Search API Product & Mobile team (6-8 engineers). You will drive the technical direction and grow the team, delivering high-impact mobile features within Coupang's app.

You will work closely with ML and backend teams, shape architecture for search and discovery, and own performance, memory, and latency targets to improve customer experience and revenue.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in mobile development and 2 years in people management.
• Expert proficiency in either iOS or Android.
• Strong mobile architecture knowledge (MVVM, TCA, Coordinators).
• Experience shipping features in high-traffic consumer apps.
• Demonstrated experience with A/B experimentation on mobile.
• Proven technical leadership: architecture decisions and design docs.

About the Team

The Search AI Product & Mobile team sits within Coupang's Search and Discovery org. We're dedicated to crafting innovative search and discovery experiences for Coupang customers — using cutting‑edge AI to empower users to navigate products with ease and find everything they need. As the mobile TLM of this team, you own one of the most critical product surfaces on Coupang's app — Search and Discovery, where 60%+ of transactions happen. We move at high velocity, work closely with ML and backend platform teams, and ship features that have direct, measurable impact on customer satisfaction and revenue.

The Role

We're looking for a Manager - Mobile Enginerring, who will lead the Search API Product & Mobile team (6-8 team members), drive the technical direction of the team and grow the team members. The main responsibilities is leading the team to drive the Coupang business and pave the way for the future AI search experience.

What You Will Do

• Build, grow and mentor a team of mobile engineers includign iOS and Android.
• Build inclusive team culture to make every one belong, refine process to make team members’ work easier.
• Drive the cross team collaborations with Backend and ML teams, even cross organizations.
• Define and drive the architecture for Coupang's search and discovery features, including search results pages, query suggestions, zero‑state discovery, and AI-powered recommendations
• Set technical direction for mobile-side integration of ML models (on-device inference, server-side ranking signal consumption, feature flag-gated experiments)
• Lead architecture reviews and design docs; your decisions have long‑term codebase impact
• Own the end-to-end technical quality bar: performance budgets, memory footprints, latency targets

What We Are Looking For

• 8+ years of industry experience in mobile development and 2 years of people management experience.
• Expert proficiency in either iOS or Android
• Strong grasp of mobile architecture patterns (MVVM, TCA, Coordinators, etc.) and when to apply them
• Experience building and shipping features in high‑traffic, data‑intensive consumer apps
• Demonstrated experience with A/B experimentation on mobile — instrumentation, analysis, iteration
• Proven technical leadership: you've shaped architecture decisions, written design docs, and driven alignment across teams
• Strong understanding of mobile performance: memory management, concurrency, rendering pipeline, network stack
• Track record of mentoring and growing engineers around you

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in search, discovery, recommendation, or feed products on mobile
• Hands‑on experience integrating ML-powered features on Mobile — whether on‑device inference (Core ML, ONNX), server‑side model APIs, or both
• Familiarity with LLM‑based product features (conversational search, query rewriting, semantic ranking)
• Background in large‑scale e‑commerce or marketplace mobile apps
• Comfort reading and reasoning about backend APIs, data pipelines, and ML model outputs (you don't need to build them, but you need to work fluently with the people who do)
• Proven track record of strong ownership, ideally within an early‑stage startup or high‑growth tech environment

Pay & Benefits

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. At Coupang, your base pay is one part of your total compensation.

The base pay for this position ranges from $194,000/year in our lowest geographic market to $243,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on several factors including market location and may vary depending on job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience.
