Description AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we're the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensures our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we're looking for talented people who want to help.

You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

Within AIS and Data Center Engineering, the Mechanical Products and Services team is driving rapid innovation in mechanical cooling and controls systems used by AWS. Our designs are fundamentally changing the data center, providing operational and financial benefits that are critical to the success of the AWS business and its millions of customers. Our engineers solve challenging technology problems and take big bets on new concepts, enabling AWS services to continue to revolutionize the industry.

This role provides the opportunity to work closely with our team of innovative mechanical engineers developing and deploying the next generation of heat rejection infrastructure for our data centers.

We're seeking a Mechanical Engineering Manager to lead development and first of kind deployments of infrastructure solutions that enable large-scale deployment of air and liquid-cooled racks into AWS data centers. You'll drive system-level solution strategy and provide technical guidance to your team, working closely with AWS builders and third-party manufacturers to develop innovative data center infrastructure.

The ideal candidate brings experience leading engineering teams to deliver system-level mechanical designs, with deep understanding of mission-critical systems and/or air-cooled data center solutions. You know how to operate products to ensure quality and scalability. This role requires strong leadership and communication skills to develop engineers, inspire teams, and influence partners while creating innovative cooling solutions.

This position requires approximately 30% travel to AWS offices, data centers, suppliers, vendors, and product validation sites. While most travel is domestic, some international travel may be required.

Open to hiring this position in Seattle, Austin, or Northern Virginia.

Key job responsibilities
  • Make high-judgment trade-offs between competing priorities, balancing short-term team needs with long-term business objectives, and determining essential features versus those that can be triaged
  • Drive strategic direction for the team's technical roadmap and influence partner teams across overlapping business and technical domains
  • Build and lead a high-performing engineering team by hiring talent that demonstrates Amazon Leadership Principles, managing performance and promotions, and creating clear growth plans for each team member
  • Establish operational excellence through metrics development, process improvements, and efficiency gains in repeatable work while maintaining quality and meeting customer requirements
  • Identify and mitigate risks, unblock engineers and partner teams, and navigate difficult situations including escalations to ensure project timeliness and success
  • Collaborate directly with partner teams to implement and improve processes regionally and propagate best practices globally
  • Provide clear technical strategy and communication across all organizational levels, managing both managers and individual contributors with varying technical experience
