Adventist Health Howard Memorial is located in Willits, CA, and has been providing high‑quality care since 1928. The 74,000‑square‑foot facility includes four surgery suites, an on‑site farm‑to‑fork restaurant, and 25 private rooms. The hospital offers primary and specialty care services and serves the surrounding community. The position offers a small‑town atmosphere with access to outdoor recreation.

Job Summary

Maintains responsibility for the overall operation of the clinical laboratory in consultation with and under the direction of Medical Directors (Pathologists) and the Regional Clinical Laboratory Directors. Develops, monitors, and provides leadership for the financial, contracting, regulatory, accreditation and client services policies and procedures for the clinical/anatomic laboratories. Selects appropriate instrumentation or test methodologies, develops and maintains an appropriate Quality Assurance (QA) program, monitors testing and QA processes, including recording and reporting of results. Supervises and directs the activities of various levels of assigned personnel using professional judgment and independent discretion.

Job Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, biological sciences, chemical sciences, allied health technologies or equivalent - required
  • Master's Degree - preferred
  • Five years' clinical laboratory experience - preferred
  • One year's leadership experience - preferred
Licenses/Certifications
  • Valid Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license in the state of employment - required (CA)
  • Current certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency for Labs (NCA) - preferred in CA and HI
Facility Specific License/Certifications
  • American Society for Clinical Pathology Certification (ASCP) - required
Essential Functions
  • Manages day‑to‑day operations of the laboratory unit, maintaining accountability for outcomes and satisfaction. Facilitates staff, equipment, supplies, and time organization; prepares technical reports; coordinates report preparation and analysis; participates in development of new procedures; plans workshops; ensures regulatory compliance.
  • Develops and implements quality control programs to ensure reliability of testing procedures, equipment function, and federal compliance; prepares and maintains records; troubleshoots and interprets specimen quality and test results; recommends quality cost containment programs.
  • Manages, coordinates, and evaluates laboratory services across specialties (Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Phlebotomy, Specimen Processing, Immunology, Pathology, etc.) to support quality laboratory service and the organization’s mission of patient care. Works with regional technical specialists; interprets accrediting agency standards, translates requirements into policies and procedures, initiates corrective actions, and coordinates on‑site inspections.
  • Provides guidance on hiring, compensation, promotions, and disciplinary actions; trains, supervises, and schedules laboratory staff; assigns staffing based on skill and patient acuity; evaluates performance; makes decisions on promotions, salary, disciplinary action, and termination.
  • Oversees financial aspects, including capital and operational budgets, monthly variance investigation, and financial and performance indicator reporting. Collaborates with Laboratory Directors and Finance on billing, accounting, auditing, CPT coding, Medicare/Medicaid billing procedures, and protocols.
  • Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.
