Job summary

BDO USA, P.A. seeks a Manager for the Industry Specialty Services Group to provide senior-level financial management for nonprofit clients, helping them achieve operational excellence and financial sustainability.

The role partners with foundations and funders, directing month-end close, audits, budgets, and financial system implementations while leading change across engagements. Occasional travel required across the U.S.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, or Finance required.
• MBA or MPA preferred.
• Seven (7)+ years nonprofit accounting experience required.
• Experience with accounting systems and nonprofit accounting principles required.
• Supervisory/management experience required.

Responsibilities

• Provide senior level financial management to nonprofits during engagements.
• Oversee month-end close, audit support, budget development, cash flow planning, and financial system implementation.
• Present analyses to leadership and boards for complex financial decisions.
• Assess compliance with nonprofit reporting standards and regulatory changes.
• Manage grant compliance including billing, budgeting, and reporting with private, federal, state agencies.
• Lead process improvements to ensure best accounting practices and efficiency.

The Manager in the Industry Specialty Services Group practice, provides professional services that are sensitive to the needs and values of both nonprofit organizations and the funders that support them. This is a unique opportunity for a mission-oriented accounting professional who wants to leverage their nonprofit expertise to support organizations both locally and virtually.

Industry Specialty Services Group is a growth-oriented management consulting practice dedicated to building the capacity of the nonprofit sector. We partner with our nonprofit and philanthropic clients to help them attain operational excellence, ensure financial sustainability and effectively achieve their desired impact. Our collaborative approach includes client input and involvement at each stage of an engagement.

Job Duties

Responsibilities vary based on engagements and client needs and require an independent and multi-talented professional with solid nonprofit financial management expertise, change management experience, and a consulting mindset.

Service Delivery

• Acts as a key team member in the transitional services practice area, provides senior level financial management services to nonprofits going through organizational and/or leadership change
• Performs and/or oversees accounting functions such as month-end close and review, audit support, budget development, cash flow planning, and financial system implementation
• Supports leadership teams and Board of Directors in making financial decisions including presenting analysis and findings and effectively communicating complex financial information to a variety of audiences that have varying levels of financial literacy
• Assists in complying with new nonprofit financial reporting and disclosure standards
• Conducts fiscal and operational infrastructure assessments and provides insight into organizational financial sustainability
• Oversees grant compliance to include billing, budgeting, accounting, and compliance reporting with private, federal, state agencies (while recognizing restrictions and advising accordingly)
• Analyzes current processes, systems, and procedures and makes recommendations to ensure best accounting practices and keep abreast of changing regulatory environments

Relationship Management

• Develops and maintains current and potential/new client relationships, including relationships with foundations, local government, collaborative partner organizations, and direct service providers
• Leads client and staff through training, guidance, and coaching

Practice And Product Development

• Participates in business development activities, such as project scoping and proposal development
• Actively participates in the development of Transitional Services, including monthly meetings and other areas of product development
• Identifies ways to make engagements more efficient and productive

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Manages and coaches Consultants on client engagements, especially in the areas of project management and quality assurance
• Directly supervises consultants who may work on a range of engagements over time
• Evaluates performance on client engagements

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, or Finance, required
• MBA or MPA, preferred

Experience

• Seven (7) or more years of demonstrated accounting experience with a specific focus on nonprofits, required
• Experience with accounting systems and nonprofit accounting principles, required
• Supervisory/management experience, required

License(s)/Certification(s)

• CPA, preferred

Software

• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel, required
• Experience with accounting systems such as Sage Intacct and NetSuite, preferred
• Experience using Microsoft Copilot or other generative AI tools to support analysis, research, communication and workflow efficiency, preferred

• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to travel up to 20% of the time, preferred
• Strong analytical and basic research skills
• Solid organizational skills especially ability to meet project deadlines with a focus on details

• Proven ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously
• Demonstrated command of FAR, CAS, and GSA schedules
• Ability to follow and apply specific rules and regulations
• Ability to work with minimal supervision

Individual salaries that are offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.

National Range: $110,000 - $140,000

Maryland Range: $110,000 - $140,000

NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $110,000 - $140,000
