Job summary

The American Red Cross in Chicago is seeking a Laboratory Operations Manager to oversee daily lab functions, staff, budget, and regulatory compliance. You will guide testing procedures, ensure safety and quality, and support donor programs under the Medical Director’s oversight.

With a focus on quality, leadership, and customer service, you will manage complex immunohematology testing, mentor staff, and maintain collaboration with cross-functional teams to meet strategic lab goals.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science or related field.
• SBB (ASCP) certification or equivalent required.
• Minimum 6 years of directly related experience including 2 years laboratory experience in high complex immunohematology testing.
• 3 years of management in an IRL or equivalent hospital setting.

Responsibilities

• Manage laboratory staff including hiring, training, coaching, evaluating and disciplining to ensure a well-qualified team.
• In conjunction with the Medical Director, provide guidance to ensure appropriate patient care.
• Ensure IRL participation in the American Rare Donor Program and Diagnostics Manufacturing Division.
• Oversee planning process and ensure long-range goals for laboratory supervisory staff.
• Ensure regulatory compliance in area of responsibility and foster a quality-driven environment.
• May perform donor and/or patient testing procedures and complete required quality control as appropriate.
