Qualifications

  • Guide diagnostic tests (oil, power factor, SFRA) and analyze results.
  • Perform root cause analysis to improve reliability and safety.
  • Act as technical liaison between plants and Calpine management; mentor junior engineers.
  • Manage critical spare components and develop execution plans to meet milestones.
  • Monitor schedules and deliverables; may oversee Project Managers.
  • Travel to plants, transformer factories, and vendor offices as needed.

Job Summary

The Manager Engineering Project Management – Transformer Specialist oversees Calpine's Transformer Reliability Program for all transformer assets and serves as a technical authority for all types of transformers. Key responsibilities include providing technical guidance on maintenance and testing of distribution and large power transformers, leading repair projects, and guiding diagnostic tests (oil, power factor, SFRA, etc.). Additional duties involve conducting root cause analysis for failures to ensure reliability and safety.

This position will act as a technical liaison between the plants and Calpine management and will provide technical leadership to both internal and external entities. The successful candidate will manage critical spare transformer components and accessories held in inventory, develop execution plans to achieve project milestones while minimizing costs, and establish project strategy and monitor critical‑path schedules and deliverables. Oversight of Project Managers may be required, and the role includes mentoring and training junior engineers. The job will involve office work, occasional travel to plants, transformer factories, and vendor offices.

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of work experience and education. Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Previous work leadership or senior‑level contributor experience.
  • Typically requires a minimum of 10+ years in the area of specialization.
Job Requirements
  • Expert‑level experience with diagnostic tools, transformer electrical testing, oil sampling, dissolved‑gas analysis, and transformer maintenance.
  • Experience in diagnosing and repairing faulty transformers.
  • Ability to analyze test results to determine the health index and remaining lifespan of equipment.
  • Extensive site work at utility substations, power‑generation facilities, or industrial sites.
  • Experience managing contractors or internal employees on projects.Experience writing, reviewing, and checking specifications, proposals, quotes, contracts, purchase orders, and other project documents.
  • Safety experience working on or around HV, MV, and LV systems in hazardous environments such as power plants and substations.
  • Strong supervisory technical and leadership skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a technical lead in an autonomous role.
Salary Information

Salary Range: $154,231.89 – $196,645.66
