Education Department

The primary goal of the Education Manager is to develop competent caregivers for quality patient care. The roles used to accomplish this consist of educator, consultant, and practitioner. This role will assist the Director of Education in overseeing the daily operation of the Education Department. The Manager is a professional practitioner with expertise in a specialized area of nursing and is accountable and responsible for facilitating, guiding, and supporting nursing personnel in the delivery of safe and effective patient care.

Under the guidance of the Director, the Manager collaborates with nursing leadership to assess, plan, develop, implement and evaluate evidenced-based practice transition to improve healthcare outcomes. This role provides oversight of professional development for practice transitions. The roles used to accomplish this consist of educator, researcher, change agent, and mentor. The Manager models professional behavior and fosters a professional nursing climate.

Primary Duties:
  • Assists in supervising the daily operation of the Education Department including but not limited to, selecting, supervising staff. Monitors and evaluates the performance of employees directly supervised such as counseling and disciplines as necessary, with maintenance of documentation of performance (i.e. timely performance appraisals). Directs responsibilities for Educators. Analyzes workload and skill requirements to meet the needs in department and to ensure productivity and budget compliance is met.
  • Participates and assists nurses in professional role development, practice role transitions, and succession planning.
  • Serves as the Site Clinical Coordinator for the New Graduate Nurse Residency program. Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of the Nurse Residency program for new graduates. Establishes and maintains a program that aligns with ANCC accreditation standards.
  • Collaborates with Nursing Leaders for routine updates on quality, safety, and nursing excellence which includes nurse residency program orientation and education.
  • Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of in-services and continuing education for practice transitions programs in collaboration with the Director. Provides structure and outline for practice transitions to ensure staff is assigned appropriate education opportunities to be successful in roles.
  • Facilitates the onboarding of employees to ensure integration to the role in both practice and system-wide levels, focusing on retention and growth.
  • Promotes clinical inquiry through participation in nursing research, dissemination of research findings, and integration of new evidence into practice.
  • Utilizes valid and reliable methods to measure performance outcomes and quality indicators to revisecontent and delivery methods.
  • Utilizes adult learning principles and instructional design standards to develop and implement quality curriculum, focused on achievement of excellent outcomes.
  • Partners with Shared Governance/Decision Making Councils on the practice and system wide level to effect change and generate positive outcomes.
  • Role models professional behavior and fosters a professional nursing climate.
  • Assesses the learning needs of department and hospital staff, and develops an educational plan to meet these needs.
  • Assists in developing, implementing and evaluating in-services and continuing education programs for hospital departments in collaboration with other educators.
  • Develops and implements house wide and department based competencies.
  • Participates in the development, dissemination, or implementation of department standards, policies and procedures for nursing care.
  • Directs patient and family education programs to include: identification of educational needs of patient/family/significant other(s) by collaborating with attending physicians, department heads, and staff.
  • Attends all department staff meetings.
  • Attends meetings with Directors / Managers as needed.
  • Collaborates with leaders, stakeholders, and others to facilitate excellence and positive outcomes.
  • Identifies any staff or patient related clinical issues or problems and communicates to Nursing Director/Manager immediately.
  • Provides clinical coaching to staff as needed when clinical issues are identified.
  • Assists the Director with development and implementation of new programs and projects.
  • Utilizes positive communication skills to effect resolution and team work.
  • Complies with safety policies and procedures in order to provide a safe environment for employees, patients and visitors.
  • Demonstrates necessary flexibility in regard to changes in Hospital or department activities.
  • Assists with the development, management, and monitoring of educational activities with outside agencies including schools and other facilities with emphasis in Nursing & Allied Health and Clinical Affiliation Agreements.
  • Participates and promotes concepts of the Magnet Journey. Model Magnet principles to continuously elevate patient care at Salinas Valley Health in collaboration with the Nursing Service Departments. Applies principles established in the Accountability Grid attached.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) required. Master’s Degree in nursing (MSN) preferred.

Licensure: Current California Registered (RN) license required. Current BLS/Healthcare Provider status as per American Heart Association standards required. Certified in Nursing Professional Development or certification in specialty area of nursing preferred.

Experience: Five (5) years’ clinical registered nurse experience required. One (1) year teaching in an acute care hospital required. One (1) year supervisory experience preferred. Previous background in clinical simulation preferred.

Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Precise hand/eye coordination and finger dexterity is necessary to operate computer and other office equipment.

Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communications skills required, as well as the ability to interact with Administration, Department Directors, employees and the public in a friendly and professional manner.

Pay Range: The hourly rate for this position is $83.86 - $102.00. The range displayed on this job posting reflects the target for new hire salaries for this position.
