Job description

Aecon delivers some of the most complex infrastructure projects, from transportation networks to critical energy programs, connecting communities and powering future generations. With roots in North America and an international presence, we serve public and private sector clients through our Construction and Concessions segment.

What is the Opportunity?

At Aecon Engineering Services Inc. (United), we are a team of engineers, builders, planners, and thinkers that design and build today’s infrastructure for tomorrow. In December 2024, United Engineers and Constructors was acquired by Aecon Group Inc., and the United team continues to operate as an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company.

We are seeking a Design Manager with multidiscipline design and major project execution experience in the conventional power generation market. The Design Manager will manage a multidisciplinary group of designers, coordinate workloads, assign tasks, and ensure projects meet established schedules and budgets.

What You'll Do Here
  • Develop and manage complex engineering design projects for power generation facilities.
  • Assign work, meet project schedules, ensure all drawings are accurate, and coordinate assignments within discipline groups.
  • Provide technical guidance, assistance, training, and encouragement to all members of the design team.
  • Collaborate with Chief Discipline Engineers, Supervising Discipline Engineers, and Project Engineering Managers to keep management informed of manpower requirements and staffing issues.
  • Advise the project management team about the status of assignments with respect to schedule, budgets, delays, and adverse problems.
  • Ensure designs are consistent with project technical requirements and scope.
  • Review and validate completed engineering designs and drawings to ensure accuracy and compliance with project specifications and applicable design codes, standards, and procedures.
  • Review and “release for use” vendor documents, lead inter‑discipline reviews, resolve discrepancies, and consolidate comments.
  • Guarantee the quality, quantity, and completeness of assigned design tasks.
  • Oversee preparation of drawings, layouts, and 3D models.
  • Lead the planning and scheduling of design tasks associated with assigned projects.
  • Utilize computer software associated with design assignments and provide guidance to others.
  • Act with integrity in all aspects of responsibility.
  • Present information and ideas clearly and listen effectively to others.
  • Develop and conduct technical training seminars.
  • Understand the use of requisitions and the role of materials management, and review/advise on purchase orders and subcontracts.
  • Support alignment of customer and company objectives.
What You Bring To The Team
  • Education: Associate’s degree in design or equivalent experience.
  • Experience: Minimum of 16 years of experience, with at least 7 years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Capability with 2D and 3D power plant design.
  • Expertise with AutoDesk Plant 3D, Revit, and AutoCAD 2D.
  • Experience with Hexagon’s Smart 3D and Bentley MicroStation.
  • Nuclear design experience is a plus.
