TITLE:

Manager Ambulatory Education and Training


JOB OVERVIEW:

The Manager Ambulatory Education and Training will oversee the professional development and training for the clinic network. This role is responsible for developing and maintaining an overarching strategy to ensure clinic network team members (clinical and nonclinical) meet both skill and competency objectives. This role will provide direct supervision to staff, use evidence-based research to identify strategies and tactics for improving professional development activities, clinical practice, and patient outcomes and coordinate education initiatives with key clinic network stakeholders.

Typically, Monday - Friday or as required to fulfill responsibilities.

Director of Ambulatory Operations and Education


PREREQUISITES:


  1. Bachelor's degree in nursing, required. Master's degree in Health Care Administration, preferred.

  2. Unrestricted active RN license to practice in WA State, required.

  3. Certification in Nursing Professional Development, preferred.

  4. Minimum five (5) years relevant healthcare operations experiences, required.

  5. Minimum three (3) years leadership experience required, preferably in an ambulatory healthcare setting.

  6. Minimum two (2) years experience coordinating or managing education program /curriculum design, development, implementation, and evaluation/assessment, required.

  7. Minimum of one (1) year experience in working in an electronic Medical Record, Epic preferred.


QUALIFICATIONS:


  1. Experienced in professional development or nursing academic education.

  2. Knowledge of adult learning principles, curriculum design, and change management processes.

  3. Experience in a nursing or practice leadership role and staff consultation.

  4. Experience with CQI and standards development.

  5. Able to manage multiple demands and competing priorities.

  6. Ability to collaborate and work in a multidisciplinary team environment, supporting staff members and management in maintaining and promoting a positive work environment cultivating open communication and teamwork with peers, other departments, and management staff.

  7. Knowledge of ambulatory clinic operations, patient safety and quality regulatory requirements, Joint Commission accreditation guidelines and WA State rules and requirements as applicable.

  8. Clinical content expert with ability to identify problems such as scope of practice, and handoff gaps.

  9. Ability to proficiently work with Microsoft Office programs and use of scheduling software and other database computer programs, including educational training programs.

  10. Able to handle multiple demands and competing priorities.

  11. Self-motivated and results oriented.

  12. Demonstrated leadership and relational skills with the ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of healthcare personnel and internal/external stakeholders using verbal, written and presentation form.

UNIQUE PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS, ENVIRONMENT AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works at a computer for extended periods of time. Ability to travel to various departments, including off-site locations (UW Medicine sites), as needed for committee participation, site assessments, educational programs, and consultations. Regularly participates in meetings at UW Medicine facilities related to leadership development, patient safety and quality programs. This position may require irregular hours to meet regulatory, UW Medicine, and internal program goals and deadlines. Available for emergency consultations as needed during off-hours.

Educator - To provide learning opportunities and to facilitate the adult learning process.


  1. Assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and revise clinical education and learning needs throughout the clinic network using professional development standards.

  2. Work collaboratively with the Clinic Leadership to orient and maintain the clinical competency of both licensed and non-licensed staff.

  3. Supports the orientation of new clinical employees, including the use of clinical systems needed to perform in their role and setting.

  4. Seeks experiences that reflect current theories and methods of teaching, learning, and delivery.

  5. Coordinate, monitor and evaluate student experiences. Work collaboratively with the student placement specialist at VMC & the participating schools to maintain a high-quality student placement program.

  6. Demonstrates continuing competence in area of specialty through certification maintenance, continuing education, and performance.

  7. Uses evidence-based practices in curriculum development.

  8. Promotes the use of evidence-based practices for educational program development.

  9. Initiates and/or participates in research projects and implement findings, when appropriate.

  10. Practice in a manner that is sensitive to cultural diversity.


Educational Management - To manage the educational experience and provide/support the administrative functions related to the role.


  1. Ensure that educational activities are congruent with the VMC's Mission, Vision, Values and Goals and are based upon identified needs.

  2. Develop and conduct educational programs, in collaboration with Clinic Leadership and the Medical Staff of the Network.

  3. Develop operational budget and cost-benefit analyses for clinical training proposals, in conjunction with the Clinic Leadership.

  4. Provides for the evaluation of the appropriateness and effectiveness of material resources and facilities as a component of each educational activity.

  5. Maintains a record-keeping and report system maintaining confidentiality within legal and regulatory parameters.

  6. Works with the Clinic Management team to maintain a continued state of readiness for all regulatory requirements. Maintains a solid understanding of regulatory requirements.

  7. Supervises professional development staff.


Consultant - To assist with the integration of new learning into the practice environment and to serve as a resource for professional growth and development of other personnel.


  1. Participates as a as a clinical expert providing content expertise in the development, review and revision of Clinic Network policies and procedures as they relate to operations, as well as quality and safety improvement initiatives.

  2. Acts as the Committee Chairperson or Co-chairperson as directed including but not limited to the Policy & Procedure Committee.

  3. Collaborates with the Ambulatory Quality and Safety team to provide education & training guidance in relation to proposed workflows, questionnaires/forms and policy and procedures changes.

  4. Responsible for clinical oversight of clinic network operations including MAs and other licensed technical positions who provide patient care.

  5. Review scope of practice for each licensed clinical job class within the Valley Medical Center's Clinic Network.

  6. Participate in quality management programs.

  7. Collaborate with Clinic Managers, Medical Directors, and Care Management Manager to facilitate learning experiences for students.

  8. Determine the need for, the type, and the extent of supervision in educational practice.


Leadership


  1. Recruits, hires, develops, holds staff accountable to performance expectations and standards, coaches and develops staff, disciplines and terminates staff when necessary.

  2. Prepares and presents performance reviews.

  3. Assures adequate staffing levels to meet department needs.

  4. Develops an overarching education and training strategy for the clinic network in collaboration with clinic leaders.

  5. Serves in key roles on committees and advisory boards at VMC and in community

  6. Incorporates new models, techniques and theories related to nursing professional development and clinical practice.

  7. Provides guidance, resources, and knowledge for professional growth of others.

  8. Participates in community events as related to the role.
