Job Description
SUMMARY :

The Accounting Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Accounting office and maintains direct oversight and responsibility for the University's investment and endowment accounting. Additionally, this position is a resource to the campus community regarding accounting matters, performs and manages the process to prepare and complete the 990/990T/4720 tax preparations, and supports the annual audit of the University's consolidated financial statements. This position will also assist with the design and implementation of continued process modernization and improvements.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Management/Leadership Responsibilities
    • Directly supervise Accounting Analyst(s).
    • Manage the day-to-day activities of the Accounting Office.
    • Mentor and develop accounting office staff.
    • Assume responsibility for the Accounting Office in the absence of the Director.
  • General and Endowment Accounting Responsibilities
    • Perform complex accounting for the University's charitable gift annuities, outside trusts, operating investments, and other investments.
    • Perform endowment accounting at the University including determining endowment market value, understanding donor restrictions, and completing various monthly/quarterly/yearly reports or surveys.
    • Review accounting entries and reconciliations prepared by other team members of the Accounting office.
    • Perform complex monthly reconciliations involving multiple systems and deep understanding of underlying accounting entries and campus processes.
    • Ensure reconciliation of all general ledger activity on a monthly or quarterly basis, as appropriate.
    • Prepare schedules and disclosures needed for the University's quarterly and annual financial statements in accordance with the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) guidance, including Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) Topic 820, Fair Value Measurements and Disclosures.
    • Coordinate with Spider Management Company (SMC) on new investments.
  • Analysis and Reporting
    • Create, with the Director, the quarterly and annual financial statements and other external reports.
    • Lead preparation of the University's annual 990 and related tax filings, working with external tax accountants to ensure correct and timely reporting.
    • Perform/resolve all state tax correspondence/inquiries in cooperation with the director and SVP/Controller of the University.
    • Analyze finances for Board reporting, senior leadership reporting, and departmental reporting.
    • Assist the Director in the coordination and preparation of annual external financial statement audits.
  • System Administration, Education, Training and Compliance
    • Mentor and assists campus on endowment and general accounting policies.
    • Evaluate and assess current practices and procedures, make recommendations for improvement
    • Assist with special projects as necessary.
    • Assist University departments in various accounting/finance issues.
    • Other duties as assigned.
  • SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
    • Supervises staff, including hiring, scheduling, and assigning work, providing input in performance reviews, promotions, or terminations.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
  • Successfully works in an open, collaborative office environment
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to walk to points on campus within a one-mile radius
  • Ability to lift - up to 10 pounds.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Knowledge, skills & ability:
    • Thorough understanding of US GAAP, specifically FASB based accounting, including extensive knowledge of accounting guidance related to investments and not-for-profit accounting
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills across all levels of organization including external contacts
    • Strong time management and organizational skills
    • Knowledge of employee relationship building and performance management techniques
    • Advanced Microsoft Excel with proficiency in other Microsoft products, specifically Word, Access and PowerPoint
    • Preferred experience with common higher education ERPs (Banner, Workday, Oracle, etc.).
    • Ability to create queries and reports from databases
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE :
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance
  • 5-7 year's experience in higher education, public accounting, or not-for-profit accounting
  • CPA or CPA candidate preferred
WORK HOURS :

Full Time, Exempt

Monday - Friday 7.75 hours/daily, 38.75 hours/weekly

SALARY STRUCTURE :

Pay Grade 8 (Hiring Range $68,474.00 to $101,858.00 annually)
