Job summary

City of Sacramento is seeking a Utilities Field Services Serviceworker in the Water Distribution division. This transfer opportunity is for current City of Sacramento employees only.

The role involves heavy field work and maintaining water, wastewater, or drainage systems. The position requires two years of related experience (one year in the specialized area), a valid Class B license (Class A for some assignments), and relevant operator certificates.

Qualifications

  • Two years of Sacramento Utilities Field Services experience, including one year in water, wastewater, or drainage.
  • Must possess a valid Class B Driver License with the appropriate endorsements at appointment; Class A may be required for some assignments.
  • Possession of a Water Distribution Operator Grade II or III certificate and/or a Collection Systems Maintenance Grade II or III certificate is desirable.

  • Lead guidance for a small crew.
  • Operate water, sewer, or drainage equipment safely and proficiently.
  • Respond to emergencies as required.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings.

THE POSITION

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • City operations, procedures, and regulations for water, wastewater, or drainage field work.
  • Journey level pipe fitting and plumbing methods and techniques.
  • Principles, practices, and methods used in the construction, repair, and maintenance of water distribution, wastewater collection, or storm drainage systems.
  • Occupational health and safety standards and practices associated with the work.
  • City geography, the layout of water, sewer, and storm drain lines, and the municipal street system.
  • Confined space entry techniques.
  • Codes related to chemical applications.
  • Flood fight procedures.
Ability To
  • Perform heavy, manual labor over extended periods of time.
  • Trouble-shoot for faulty system equipment and facilities.
  • Provide lead guidance on a regular basis to a small crew.
  • Operate water, sewer, or drainage equipment with skill and proficiency.
  • Respond to emergencies as required.
  • Make independent decisions in field situations with effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Perform a wide range of construction and maintenance activities, using standard methods and equipment.
  • Work effectively with Utilities customers, other employees, contractors, and the general public.
  • Safely operate heavy construction and repair equipment with proficiency and efficiency.
  • Recognize and deal with hazards encountered in the course of work.
  • Read, interpret, and understand blueprints, and construction drawings.
  • Modify as-built maps as necessary.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Recognize confined spaces.
  • Practice shoring techniques when appropriate.
  • Perform traffic control in a safe manner.
Experience

Two years of experience as a Utilities Field Services Serviceworker in the City of Sacramento, which must include one year in the specialized area (water, wastewater, or drainage).

Special Qualifications

Driver License:

Possession of a valid Class B Driver License with the appropriate endorsements is required at the time of appointment, and is a condition of continued employment. Loss of the Class B License is a cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Possession of a valid California Class A Driver License with appropriate endorsements is required for some assignments.

Certificate

Possession of a Water Distribution Operator Grade II or III certificate and/or a Collection Systems Maintenance Grade II or III certificate is desirable.

Respiratory Protective Equipment

Work in this class requires wearing respiratory protective equipment at times. When assigned to such work, facial hair must be shaven when it interferes with the safe fitting of respiratory protective equipment.

Residency Requirement

Employees in this classification must reside within thirty-five (35) air miles from the freeway interchange at W-X Streets, 29th-30th Streets within one year following appointment.
