Job summary

State of South Carolina is seeking a Chief of Security for the Staff Development and Training Center. You will oversee security operations, inmate supervision, inspections, and weapon/equipment control, while ensuring compliance with agency standards.

Responsibilities include supervising staff, maintaining firearms ranges, and coordinating training curricula across new employee programs, leadership development, and mandatory trainings.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma and relevant supervisory experience.
• A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for supervisory experience.
• SCDC Staff Development and Training Center certification required within six months of entry.

• Oversees and monitors courses in new employee training curricula, Agency Orientation, Correctional Officer Basic Training, Annual Mandatory Training, Supervisory and Leadership Development, In-Service and Specialized Training.
• Ensures training is delivered consistently and in accordance with agency requirements, established curricula, and Applicable standards.
• Monitors compliance with agency requirements, ACA, CLEE, and applicable legal mandates or legal settlements.
• Serves as Chief of Security for the Staff Development and Training Center and oversees security operations, inmate supervision, inspections, searches, key/tool/equipment control, grounds, vehicles, and related operational requirements.
• Supervises assigned staff and monitors performance.
• Oversees agency firearms ranges, inspections, maintenance range agreements, firearms training requirements, and ammunition needs.
• Monitors compliance with agency requirements, ACA, CLEE, and knowledge of adult learning, curriculum development, instructional methods, training needs assessment, testing and evaluation.

Job description

• Must maintain required certifications.
• Limited supervision - employee is expected to follow established objectives with minimal direction from supervisor.
• Resume not required, but highly recommended.

Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma and relevant supervisory experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required supervisory experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements

• A high school diploma and eight (8) years experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include four (4) years of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 2 years)(Bachelor's and above = 4 years).
• Must be certified by the SCDC Staff Development and Training Center and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.

Preferred Experience

• A bachelor's degree and four (4) years of experience in staff development and/or training, including two (2) years of supervisory experience.

OR

• An associate degree and six (6) years of experience in staff development and/or training including two (2) years of supervisory experience.

OR

• A high school diploma and eight (8) years of experience in staff development and/or training, including two (2) years of supervisory experience.
