Job summary

The Village of Downers Grove is hiring a Maintenance Worker II in the Water Division of Public Works. This position serves as a foreman of a work crew, coordinating and delegating crew duties and activities, and performing labor tasks.

The ideal candidate will oversee crew operations and maintain a wide variety of tools and equipment used to repair and maintain Village roads, water mains, storm sewers, and related facilities. Strong supervisory and multitasking skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • Requires ability to supervise and instruct a crew and disseminate tasks.
  • Familiarity with Excel, Word, GIS, Google Earth, Public Stuff, and Lucity.
  • Ability to transition quickly between duties and multitask.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises daily duties for maintenance of village systems and infrastructure.
  • Provides effective instruction to the crew.
  • Performs water repairs for main breaks, hydrants, valves, and meters.
  • Participates in water shut-offs/turn-ons and distribution of the water system.
  • Performs snow removal using heavy equipment.
  • Responds to public works service requests and departmental needs.
  • Participates in setup and cleanup for special events.
  • Upholds safety procedures and maintains customer service standards.

Maintenance Worker II
Water


The Village of Downers Grove is seeking qualified applicants for aMaintenance Worker IIposition in the Water Division of Public Works. This position serves as a foreman of a work crew, coordinating and delegating crew members’ duties and activities, and performing labor tasks. The ideal candidate will be able to oversee crew operations and the maintenance of a wide variety of tools and equipment used to repair and maintain Village roads, water mains, storm sewers, traffic control facilities, grounds, and equipment.


Major Duties and Functions:


  • – Supervises the daily duties related to the maintenance of a variety of Village systems and infrastructure, including roadways, sidewalks, water, traffic signage and traffic control, forestry, and stormwater

  • – Provides effective instruction to the crew

  • – Performs water repairs for main breaks, hydrants, valves, and meters

  • – Participates in water shut-offs and turn-ons, and the overall distribution and general maintenance of the water system in the Village

  • – Performs snow removal while using assigned heavy equipment

  • – Responds to all public works service requests as well as other department service needs

  • – Carries out special response and repair duties associated with emergencies

  • – Participates in setup and cleanup for Special Events in the Village

  • – Upholds work zone safety procedures

  • – Demonstrates superior internal and external customer service skills through relationships with staff and communications and interactions with the public

  • – Maintains flexibility in work scheduling; allows for off-hour scheduling

  • – Attends all required safety training and applies training while performing work duties

  • – Other related duties as assigned


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required:


  • – Capable of supervising and instructing a work crew, with the ability to understand verbal instructions and disseminate work tasks.

  • – Ability to learn Microsoft Excel, Word, Geographic Information System (GIS), Google Earth, Public Stuff, and Lucity.

  • – Ability to transition between jobs and duties quickly, without losing efficiency or focus; multitasking.

  • – Ability to work independently, when needed, with minimal instruction.


Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED with two years of experience working in a labor role; or any equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.


Licenses and Certifications:

Possess a valid Illinois class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brakes within six months of hire; training in OSHA construction safety and health standards desired.


Salary and Benefits:

Starting wages for this position are $65,565, increasing to $93,665 following six years of service. This full-time, non-exempt position is in the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 150, Public Employees Division. The Village provides an excellent benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, as well as participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).Review the Benefits Summary for additional details.
