DEFINITION
Under close supervision to perform unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair and custodial work on Agency buildings, facilities and pumping station equipment; to learn the more difficult and specialized maintenance, repair assignments; to learn basic equipment operation skills; and to perform other job-related work as required.
Maintenance Worker I
This is the entry and trainee level classification for positions assigned to basic labor, repair, maintenance tasks and custodial duties of the Agency buildings, facilities, and grounds required to ensure that all are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for Agency and public use. Employees should have basic mechanical and/or electrical knowledge, skills and aptitudes but no previous experience with the types of equipment, facilities, or buildings associated with wastewater facilities. Employees in this class normally work under the close and continuous supervision of more experienced staff performing a group of relatively repetitive or closely related duties according to established procedures. While a variety of tasks may be assigned, each step usually fits a pattern which has been established and explained before work is commenced. Generally, work is observed and reviewed both during its performance and upon completion, and changes in procedure or exceptions to rules are explained in detail as they arise. Advancement to the “II” level is based on demonstrated proficiency in performing the assigned functions and is at the discretion supervisory or management staff.
Maintenance Worker II
This is the full journey level class in the Maintenance Worker series providing the full range of repair, maintenance, and custodial duties on Agency buildings, facilities and pumping station equipment. Incumbents are expected to perform the full range of repair and maintenance work on wastewater treatment facilities and pumping station equipment and facilities. Positions at this level are distinguished from the Maintenance Worker I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working on a more independent basis, applying developed skills, and exercising judgment and initiative. Assignments are performed with the expectation that incumbents have the ability to choose among alternatives in solving job problems and work productively in the occasional absence of a supervisor. Positions at this level receive instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Work is normally reviewed only on completion and for overall results. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the Maintenance Worker II level are normally filled by advancement from the Maintenance Worker I level.
