Job summary

West Virginia Northern Community College is seeking a hands-on Facilities Maintenance Technician to perform maintenance, repair, and cleanup of buildings, grounds, and equipment. The role includes maintaining parking lots, opening and securing buildings, and occasional travel to other campuses.

You will work across maintenance, campus services, grounds, and custodial tasks, with priorities on electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and preventative upkeep.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 1 year+ Building Maintenance experience.
• Minimum 6 months Lawn Care experience.
• Knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, heating and air conditioning.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs. with assistance 100+ lbs.
• Valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

• Perform building maintenance tasks including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and painting.
• Conduct preventative maintenance on HVAC and related systems.
• Maintain grounds, parking lots, and equipment upkeep.
• Assist with office moves, event setup, and campus mail/bank runs.
• Open and secure buildings and classrooms; respond to security needs.
• Snow removal and grounds care as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

Maintenance (50%)

• Building Maintenance:
• 1. Electrical- changing bulbs, ballasts, switches & receptacles.
• 2. Plumbing - unclog drains, urinals and toilets using a plunger or sewer snake.
• 3. Carpentry- building walls, hanging & finish drywall, floor tile repair.
• 4. Painting
• Preventative maintenance:
• 1. Cleaning roof drains
• 2. Changing of filters and belts on air handlers
• 3. Cleaning coils on RTU's & condensing units.
• Equipment Maintenance:
• 1. Tractor, lawn mower, weed eater, air compressor and power washer
• 2. Hand tools- saws, drills

Campus Services (20%)

• 1. Assist faculty, staff & administration with office moves as needed
• 2. Set up and tear down for events
• 3. Mail runs & bank runs
• 4. Open buildings & classrooms

Grounds keeping (15%)

• 1. Shovel snow, scrape ice and spread salt as needed
• 2. Cut, trim, and plant grass
• 3. Vacuum & mulch leaves
• 4. Spray weeds using herbicides
• 5. Seal & stripe parking lots
• 6. Monitor grounds for trash & cigarette butts. Pick up and dispose of.

Custodial (10%)

• 1. Sweep & mop floors as needed to clean up spills, dirt, water from rain or snow days
• 2. Clean up after events as needed
• 3. Clean restrooms as needed
• 4. Fill soap, paper towel & toilet paper dispensers as needed

Other duties as assigned (5%)

• Other duties as assigned.

Performs other functions as required or assigned. Also complies with all Policies and Standards.

Education

• High school diploma or GED

Work Experience

• 1 year + Building Maintenance
• Minimum 6 months Lawn Care

Skill/Ability

• Some knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electric, heating, and air conditioning
• Ability to use hand tools and lawn equipment.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. with assistance 100 lbs. or more.
• Ability to prioritize and address any problematic issues that may arise regarding buildings, equipment, and people.
