Title

Maintenance Technician

Reports To

Maintenance Supervisor

Purpose of Position

Responsible for reviewing maintenance work tickets, scheduling site visits, and completing maintenance and repairs of swine facilities and equipment for Iowa Select Farms production sites.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
  • Adhere to ISF bio‑security policy at all times and report any violations.
  • Adhere to ISF animal well‑being policy at all times and know reporting procedures when an incident occurs.
  • Adhere to ISF safety policies and procedures and wear appropriate safety equipment (PPE) for appropriate tasks and work in a safe manner.
  • Follow company guidelines for vehicle usage.
  • Work closely with site managers and/or production supervisors to ensure all facilities operate at optimal levels.
  • Review open work ticket reports daily to schedule maintenance activities ensuring repairs are made in a timely manner.
  • Advise site managers and/or production supervisors when items can be repaired rather than replaced.
  • Utilize the ISF Tools work ticket system to effectively track all repairs, materials and labor hours associated with each repair.
  • Prioritize maintenance requests to deal with high priority items first.
  • Be available to work in an on‑call rotation for weekend emergency maintenance needs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in general construction methods including plumbing, electrical, carpentry and welding.
  • Repair and replace curtain systems.
  • Fabricate, weld and repair penning areas.
  • Repair and replace feedline systems.
  • Repair and replace ventilation systems.
  • Repair and replace waterlines.
  • Clean up debris in and around sites; including power washing.
  • Repair and replace building roof, siding, ceilings or windbreaks.
  • Repair and replace hog paneling.
  • Repair and replace light fixtures and motors; as well as outlets.
  • Repair and replace heating and cooling systems.
  • Manage parts inventory as necessary to complete necessary repairs.
  • Complete repairs safely and accurately according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Work with various hand and power tools to complete necessary repairs.
  • Maintain equipment inventory levels on maintenance vehicles to complete necessary repairs.
  • Shower in and out of facilities as necessary to complete maintenance work orders.
  • Attendance is critical. Be at work on scheduled days and be ready to walk into barns by start time given.
  • Be friendly, positive, helpful, team‑oriented, and respectful to co‑workers and management team.
  • Flexibility in hours during health and staffing challenges is required.

Work Environment
  • This position is performed indoors.
  • This position may require some tasks to be performed in extreme outside weather conditions.
  • The environment of this position will change daily pending weekly schedule.
  • This position will have duties in all facilities of Iowa Select Farms so employees will need to be comfortable working in and being exposed to all facility environments.
  • The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibrations.
  • The environment you will be working in may have nuisance levels of gases and dust, particularly in the winter months.
  • Direct contact with animals may occur, so company bio‑security practices must be understood and always practiced.
Physicality Requirements
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds along with climbing up ladders and over gates.
  • The employee must be able to continuously repeat necessary movements such as bending, lifting and different hand movements as needed to complete tasks.
Additional Requirements
  • This person must be able to work with limited or no supervision, so they must have initiative, organization, dependability, and be self‑motivated.
  • This position will require the ability to troubleshoot a wide variety of mechanical issues, so being mechanically minded is a necessity.
  • This position will require the technician to at times work with other employees, so team skills and good communication are important.
  • This person will also need basic computer and smartphone skills.
Position Type / Expected Hours of Work
  • This is a full‑time position that will typically require at least 40 hours a week.
  • Additional availability may be required during staffing challenges.
  • Weekend and holiday on‑call rotations will be required.
Travel
  • Local travel will be required for this position through the utilization of a company vehicle.
  • Occasional overnight travel might be required for necessary events that pertain to this position.
Education, Experience and Other Qualifications
  • Previous maintenance experience is preferred, but not a requirement.
  • High‑level problem‑solving skills are needed.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, with fluency in both written and verbal communication is required.
