Job summary

City of Manhattan Kansas is seeking a Maintenance Technician to support Public Works. You will assist in maintenance across Street, Traffic, Stormwater, Wastewater, and Water Distribution, operating trucks and equipment, performing routine maintenance, and ensuring safe worksites.

The role requires a high school diploma, a valid driver’s license, and CDL with airbrakes/tanker within 90 days, plus Work Zone certification within 24 months.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • CDL Class A with airbrakes and tanker endorsement within 90 days of employment (Class B for Traffic).
  • Work Zone certification for Traffic division within 24 months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Operates single/tandem axle trucks, heavy equipment, and various power/hand tools.
  • Performs routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintains safe worksites with proper warning devices and PPE.
  • Responds to public and staff inquiries regarding the division.
  • Maintains records of work completed and coordinates with contractors.
  • Attends meetings and training as required.
  • Repairs asphalt/concrete and performs snow/ice removal in Street division.
  • Places and repairs signs and pavement markings in Traffic division.
  • Inspects stormwater systems and performs related field work.
  • Operates line maintenance equipment for wastewater sewer system.
  • Repairs/maintains pipelines, valves, hydrants, meters for Water Distribution.

Starting Salary Range:$21.60 - $25.93/hour, DOQ

Closing Date: Open until filled, may close at any time

Shift/Workdays and Hours:Monday - Friday, 7:00AM - 3:30PM

Summary/Objective

The Maintenance Technician contributes to the overall mission of Public Works by working as a crewmember and contributing to public health and safety. Responsible for assisting in all related maintenance administered by the relevant division.

Essential Functions

All Maintenance Technicians perform repairs using general knowledge of basic construction techniques.

  • Operates single/tandem axle trucks, heavy equipment, and various power/hand tools.
  • Performs routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists in securing work areas and maintaining safe worksites by placement of appropriate warning devices while wearing special protective devices.
  • Answers and responds to public and staff inquiries regarding related division.
  • Maintains records regarding work completed.
  • Works with contractors and developers on repairs and maintenance.
  • Attends meetings and training as required.
Specific duties of Maintenance Technicians in various areas:
Street:
  • Repairs asphalt and concrete pavement.
  • Performs snow and ice removal, spring clean-up and flood mitigation as required.
Traffic:
  • Places new and repairs sign and pavement markings
Stormwater:
  • Conducts inspections and field work related to the stormwater management and stormwater drainage system.
  • Performs snow and ice removal, spring clean-up, flood mitigation and levee maintenance.
Wastewater Sewer Maintenance:
  • Performs preventative maintenance on the city’s sewer gathering system by operating line maintenance equipment.
Water Distribution:
  • Repairs and maintains pipelines, valves, fire hydrants, water services, meters, and other related equipment.
Perform other duties as requested:
  • Responds to emergency call-backs, including seasonal emergencies.
  • Works overtime as needed to complete regular and seasonal work.
  • Assists supervisors and other departmental personnel in other projects for the benefit of the City and/or department.
  • Division-specific duties may include: production of signs, landscaping, yard repair, meter repairs, and road right-of-way (RROW) mowing.
Requirements
Required Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Class A commercial driver’s license with airbrakes and tanker endorsement within 90 days of employment (Class B for Traffic division).
  • Work Zone certification for Traffic division (Obtain within 24 months of employment).
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Two years’ relevant experience in construction or related area.

  • Retirement/Pension - City employees are required by statute to contribute to the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS). Voluntary retirement contributions are offered with Nationwide, Mission Square, and Empower KPERS 457.

  • Education Reimbursement, Professional Development. Certifications/Licensure - The City will reimburse up to $8,000 per calendar year for tuition and fees. Professional Development funds are based on department budget. Certification/licensure may be reimbursed by the City.
