Job summary

Associated Milk Producers Inc (AMPI) seeks a skilled Maintenance Technician to support six Midwest plants. You will maintain and repair production equipment, perform preventive maintenance on motors and conveyors, and ensure food safety and product quality through adherence to EH&S programs.

Requires a High School diploma and related technical training; 1–2 years of mechanical maintenance in dairy manufacturing is preferred.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or trade certificate in a related technical field.
• 1–2 years of mechanical maintenance experience in food manufacturing preferred.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair plant equipment to ensure safety and production efficiency.
• Perform preventive maintenance on motors, pneumatic tools, conveyors, and production machinery.
• Follow Environmental, Health, and Safety programs and lockout/tagout procedures.
• Train production workers on routine maintenance.
• Keep work areas clean and manage parts inventory.

Job description

AMPI owns six Midwest-based manufacturing plants where 10 percent of the nation's American-type cheese and processed cheese is produced. The cooperative's award-winning cheese and powdered dairy products are marketed to foodservice, retail and food ingredient customers. In 2019, the co‑op launched its Dinner Bell Creamery brand and accompanying Co‑op Crafted promise, highlighting more than 50 years of dairy farm families partnering with skilled cheesemakers.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1. All AMPI employees have an obligation to report employee safety, food safety and food quality issues to personnel of authority.
2. This position has a heightened food safety and food quality responsibilities.
3. Provide maintenance support effectively and efficiently. Timely respond to maintenance related issues, quickly resolve problems and make necessary adjustments as need to maintain employee safety, product integrity and production efficiencies.
4. Ensures safe operations through adherence to Environmental, Health, and Safety programs and procedures. Follow all lockout tagout, fall protection and confined space requirements.
5. Strict adherence to housekeeping, by maintaining clean work areas, and tool accountability.
6. Ensures operation of plant equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements on motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production machines. Follows diagrams, sketches, operations manuals, manufacturer's instructions, and engineering specifications. Responsible for the startup, operations, shutdown and maintenance to ensure safe and efficient operations of plant equipment.
7. Installs, repairs, and maintains machinery and mechanical equipment by completing preventive maintenance.
8. Locates sources of problems by observing mechanical devices in operation.
9. Dismantles machinery and removes/replaces defective parts.
10. Determines changes in requirements of parts by inspecting and measuring various instruments.
11. Maintains inventories of equipment parts and supplies by checking stock.
12. Trains production workers on routine preventive maintenance.
13. Provides mechanical maintenance information by answering questions and requests.
14. Maintains a safe and clean work environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
15. Ability to operate machinery and technical equipment.
16. Knowledge of system maintenance.
17. Ability to lift and move heavy equipment.
18. Familiarity with safety standards and regulations.
19. Reports to supervisor/manager.
20. Works with more senior technicians to gain knowledge of equipment and repair.
21. Effectively pass-down to next shift personnel, unfinished repairs and unresolved maintenance/production issues.
22. Participation in the Emergency Response program is required.
23. Adhere to all Quality and Food Safety, Employee Safety, and GMP policies and procedures, reporting any nonconformity.
24. Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

• High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.
• Associates Degree from a two-year college in a related technical field or certificate or diploma from a trade school.
• Prior maintenance experience in food manufacturing, preferably the dairy or cheese industry, is preferred.
• 1-2 years of skilled experience in mechanical maintenance and repair work, or other combination of education and experience.
