Job summary

Veolia North America is hiring for a hands-on maintenance/labor position in Milwaukee. You will operate pumps and mechanical equipment, inspect and maintain sewers and tanks, and participate in safety trainings. You will assist with plant cleanups, grounds maintenance, and setup for events.

The role requires a High School Diploma or GED and 1–2 years of related experience. A valid Wisconsin CDL license with tanker endorsement is required.

Responsibilities

• Follow all safety rules, regulations, policies, and participate in safety training.
• Set up, operate, and minor repairs to pumps, compressors and other equipment.
• Inspect and assist in maintaining manholes, sewers, tanks, and related facilities.
• Clean pump stations, plants, and related structures.
• Assist in inspection of deep tunnels and related facilities; report malfunctions.
• Perform general maintenance to facilities, buildings and grounds.
• Set up rooms for functions and maintain landscaping; operate lawn equipment.
• Locate, set up temporary field offices; regrade roads around facilities.
• Flush, jet, and measure sewer systems and read river gauges.
• Perform carpentry and concrete/masonry duties as needed.
• Assist in damboards and guides installation; support other workgroups.

Job description

Position Purpose:

Under supervision, inspects and performs various manual laboring duties including the operation of laboring equipment related to sewer and concrete repairs, sewer cleaning, or the cleaning and maintenance of buildings, grounds, watercourses, deep tunnels, or equipment.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

• Required to follow all applicable safety rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in performance of assigned duties. Is required to participate in all required safety training activities. Is expected to report any unsafe conditions encountered in performance of duties.
• Set up, operate, and make minor repairs to pumps, compressors and other mechanical equipment.
• Inspect and assist in the repair and maintenance to manholes, sewers, tanks, wells, flumes, culverts, pipes, pump stations, spillage overflows, etc.
• Clean pump stations, plants, aeration tanks, clarifiers, U-drains, catch basins, weirs, flumes, spillage overflows, etc.
• Assist in the inspection of interceptors, gates, outfalls, and pump stations; take appropriate action such as removing debris, raking screens, and reporting malfunctions.
• Perform general maintenance and repair to facilities, buildings and grounds.
• Set up rooms for functions.
• Maintain landscaping, tree trimming and removal, and operate various lawn maintenance equipment; clear snow from designated areas.
• Locate, maintain, and set up temporary field offices upon request; regrade roads and areas around manholes and other District facilities.
• Flush, jet, and vactor sewers and measuring stations, etc.; read and maintain river gauges; measure depth of flow for purpose of maintenance and troubleshooting of the sewer systems.
• Perform general carpentry duties and miscellaneous concrete/masonry duties, such as manhole rehabilitation grouting, slabs, etc.
• Assist in the installation of damboards and guides, clean and maintain inside and outside drops.
• Provide assistance to other workgroups as needed.
• Pick up and deliver parts and materials for other work groups.
• Assist in the inspection of deep tunnels and related facilities; take appropriate action such as debris removal and general maintenance.
• Observes and reports to supervisor dangerous conditions or conditions requiring maintenance.
• Performs other duties of a similar level and nature as assigned.

Work Environment:

• Work involves exposures to dirt, dust, extremes in temperature and humidity, odors, heights, confined spaces, gases, raw sewage, hazardous materials.

Education/Experience/Background:

• High School Diploma/GED is required.
• 1 - 2 years of related experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Ability to properly identify and use job-related tools, gauges, equipment and machinery in compliance with safety procedures.
• Strong mechanical aptitude.
• Communicates effectively via written and oral methods with co-workers, supervisors, managers, and others when necessary.
• Ability to enter data.
• Basic skills in computers and data input devices, email, application and office software.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

• First aid and CPR certification within six months of appointment.
• Valid Wisconsin CDL driver’s license – class A, B, C. D with tanker endorsement required.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to meet the physical demands of the job.
• Ability to work in confined spaces and to wear breathing apparatus for confined entry.
