Job summary

Clinton-Newberry Natural Gas Authority is seeking a Maintenance Technician Associate to perform maintenance and repair of natural gas pipeline facilities and related systems. The role reports to the Maintenance Supervisor and requires adherence to safety standards.

The position offers state benefits including insurance, retirement, paid vacation, and select holidays, with base pay of $18.50 per hour for no experience. Compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have and maintain a South Carolina Driver’s License and the ability to maintain standards for insurability.
  • Accurate completion of required documentation.
  • Minimum one year of experience in a related field.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
  • Demonstrated computer skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills.
  • Successful completion of Leak Survey Training within one year of taking the position.
  • Within 24 months, obtain and maintain pertinent Operator Qualifications for covered tasks, as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of natural gas pipeline facilities and related equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable codes, cathodic protection, and regulations.
  • Assist in the maintenance of meter stations and regulator stations.
  • Monitor, test, maintain, and repair pipeline facilities such as rights of way, rectifiers, valves, etc.
  • Operate a vehicle and a variety of equipment, including a telephone, radio, ditch witch, backhoe, tractor, lawn equipment, fusion machine, generator, welding tools, pipefitter tools, mechanic’s tools, electrician’s tools, diagnostic instruments, hand tools, power tools, pipe locators, lift equipment, meters, gauges, etc.
  • Primarily interact and communicate with various groups and individuals such as the Maintenance Senior Technician, superintendents, co‑workers, contractors, SCDOT, other utility system personnel, ORS, and customers.
  • Monitor odorization of natural gas and initiate corrective action as needed.
  • Prepare required reports on a timely basis.
  • Assist in maintaining an organized inventory of tools and materials used in daily tasks.
  • Receive and respond to inquiries, requests, and complaints from customers; provide information or refer problems to appropriate personnel.
  • Subject to on‑call for after‑hours and weekend emergencies according to schedule.
  • Submit various records and reports including work orders, timesheets, charts, daily work reports, leak reports, odorization reports, various cards, and logs, etc.
  • Perform various other maintenance duties, including but not limited to basic ground‑keeping tasks, vehicle fueling and maintenance, painting machinery and buildings, erecting signs, etc.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and orderly workplace.
  • Adhere to and enforce safety standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Under general guidance from the Maintenance Senior Technician, the successful candidate will perform maintenance and repair of natural gas pipeline facilities and all associated systems and equipment. Reports to the Maintenance Supervisor.

Principal Accountabilities

Job Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Desired qualifications:
  • Associate degree in a technical field.
  • Three years’ experience in the natural gas industry.
  • Possess and maintain a valid state of South Carolina commercial driver’s license.
  • Electrical experience.
  • Heavy equipment operation.
  • Telecommunications experience.
  • Welding experience.
  • Natural Gas oxidation experience.
  • Advanced valve repair and maintenance experience.
  • One year of cathodic protection experience.
Physical Requirements
  • Work is minimally strenuous but may require exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Work may involve walking or standing for extended periods, primarily working outdoors and may involve work during inclement weather.
  • Must be able to walk over uneven terrain.
  • Must be available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and out‑town, as needed.
