Job summary

The Human Service Agency in Watertown, SD is seeking a Maintenance Technician to protect assets by maintaining agency buildings, homes, grounds, vehicles, and equipment in a safe, functional, and compliant condition.

This full-time role requires completing preventive and corrective maintenance with minimal supervision, responding to facility needs, and overseeing operations in the supervisor's absence. The position offers paid training, benefits, and opportunities for advancement.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum one year of building maintenance experience.
  • Experience in plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and mechanical maintenance preferred.
  • Valid South Dakota driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on buildings, residential homes, grounds, vehicles, and equipment, prioritizing emergency and routine work orders.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain plumbing, electrical, HVAC, mechanical, and carpentry systems, referring specialized work to contractors when necessary.
  • Complete general building repairs, renovations, and construction projects with minimal supervision.
  • Operate and maintain maintenance equipment, power tools, lawn equipment, snow removal equipment, and agency vehicles safely.
  • Assist with seasonal grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, snow removal, and ice control.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, inspections, and inventory of supplies.
  • Coordinate with outside contractors and vendors as needed and monitor work performed.
  • Assist with emergency preparedness, including fire and tornado drills, safety procedures, and compliance with state, ACDD, and other applicable regulations.

Description of Position

The Maintenance Technician assists the Maintenance Supervisor in protecting HSA assets by maintaining agency buildings, residential homes, grounds, vehicles, and equipment in a safe, functional, and compliant condition. This position independently completes maintenance and construction projects, responds to facility needs, and oversees maintenance operations in the supervisor's absence.

Job Knowledge and Comprehension

  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain plumbing, electrical, HVAC, mechanical, and carpentry systems, referring specialized work to contractors when necessary.
  • Complete general building repairs, renovations, and construction projects with minimal supervision.
  • Operate and maintain maintenance equipment, power tools, lawn equipment, snow removal equipment, and agency vehicles safely.

  • Ensure agency buildings remain clean, secure, organized, and in compliance with safety and sanitation standards.
  • Support program needs by moving equipment, furniture, and supplies.
  • Communicate facility issues, equipment failures, and project updates to the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Provide leadership and ensure maintenance operations continue efficiently during the supervisor's absence.
  • Complete required training and perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, mechanical systems, and general building maintenance.
  • Ability to perform routine plumbing repairs, including repairing leaks, replacing faucets and fixtures, unclogging drains, repairing toilets, and troubleshooting common plumbing issues.
  • Ability to perform basic electrical repairs, including troubleshooting electrical issues, replacing outlets, switches, light fixtures, breakers, and other minor electrical components in accordance with safety standards.
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems and the ability to troubleshoot heating and cooling issues, replace filters, inspect components, perform basic repairs, and coordinate specialized repairs when necessary.
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot building systems and equipment.
  • Experience using hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, snow removal equipment, and maintenance machinery.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, communication and time management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work independently with minimal supervision.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequently lift up to 50 pounds or more.
  • Regular bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, and driving.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum one year of building maintenance experience.
  • Experience in general building trades, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and mechanical maintenance preferred.
  • Valid South Dakota driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
