Job summary

Sylvania is seeking an experienced Maintenance position holder in Chelsea, MI. Immediate opening with a schedule including nights and Saturdays; overtime possible based on project needs.

You will perform general building maintenance across facilities, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and related trades. A high school diploma or GED, 2+ years in maintenance, and a Michigan driver’s license are required.

Qualifications

• Must be a positive, motivated, self-starter team player.
• Experience in operating large equipment is required.
• Availability to work nights and weekends; current schedule 9:00 AM–5:30 PM Tue–Sat, with possible shifts.
• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Minimum of 2 years maintenance or building trades experience.
• Valid Michigan driver’s license required.
• Hands-on maintenance skills with carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC and related trades.

Responsibilities

• General building maintenance and grounds upkeep; routine repairs.
• Carpentry: install/repair doors, frames, hardware, cabinetry, casework; frame walls.
• Plumbing: fixtures, piping, sewer line clearance.
• Electrical: fixtures, circuits, replacements, motor starters repairs.
• HVAC: diagnose, repair, maintain heating/cooling systems.
• Mechanical: repairs to air handling equipment, bearings, seals, pumps.
• Technology: assist with tech installations (projection/sound) in classrooms.
• Painting: routine painting on various surfaces.
• Glazing: glass installation/repair in doors/windows.
• Flooring: install/repair various materials.
• Metal work: welding as needed.
• Roofing: install/repair roofing materials and systems.
• Kitchen equipment: install/repair appliances; basic repairs to commercial equipment.
• Athletic field maintenance, site prep, layouts.
• Read and interpret safety rules and blueprints.

Schedule

8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, 260 days per year, plus approved overtime

Qualifications

• Demonstrated abilities as a positive, motivated, self-starting team player are essential.
• Candidates for this position must have experience in the operation of large equipment.
• All applicants must be available to work nights and weekends. Normal scheduled hours are 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM Tuesday-Saturday. Due to the nature of the position, there may be a need to work a schedule other than the first shift. The work schedule may need to be altered to accomplish the needs of the department. Scheduled hours will be based upon the projects and work needed to be completed
• Possess High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
• Minimum of 2 years maintenance or building trades experience.
• Possess Valid Michigan driver’s license.
• The Maintenance position requires a person with good hands on maintenance skills, and the desire & ability to improve those skills with time & experience. Previous experience working in the trades is preferred.
• Ability to develop and become proficient in handling skills with equipment related to carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, grounds and all phases of building construction or renovation.
• Possess the physical ability of climbing, lifting objects of at least 50 pounds and performing rigorous standard trade practices.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and training manuals, electrical and mechanical blueprints, and/or architectural blueprints.
• Ability to write legible responses to work orders and other documents.
• Possess ability to troubleshoot, install and maintain systems.
• Have demonstrated success in working effectively and harmoniously with supervisors and peers.
• Communication of problems/concerns through the chain of command in an appropriate manner.

Job Responsibilities

• General building maintenance – routine types of building, equipment and grounds maintenance and repairs.
• Carpentry – Install, repair, and maintain doors, frames and hardware. Install, repair and maintain cabinetry & casework. Frame wood and/or metal stud walls.
• Plumbing – Install, repair, and maintain plumbing fixtures, piping, equipment and systems. Ability to clear a sewer line obstruction.
• Electrical – Install, repair, and maintain electrical fixtures, circuits, equipment and systems. Ability to replace ballasts, backup batteries, receptacles and switches. Perform electrical repairs to contactors and motor starters
• HVAC – Ability to diagnose, repair and maintain a variety of heating and cooling systems.
• Mechanical – Install, repair and maintain a variety of mechanical systems and equipment. Ability to perform repairs to air handling equipment. Ability to replace equipment bearings, seals, motors and pump assemblies.
• Technology – Ability to assist technology department install, replace, hook up a variety of technology configurations, including classroom projection and sound systems.
• Painting – Ability to perform routing painting on a variety of surfaces.
• Glazing – Install, repair and maintain a variety of types of glass in doors and windows.
• Flooring – Install, repair and maintain a variety of types of flooring.
• Metal work – Perform metal repairs and maintenance as needed, including welding.
• Roofing – Install, repair and maintain a variety of roofing materials and systems.
• Kitchen equipment & appliances – Install, repair and maintain a variety of kitchen appliances and equipment. Perform basic repairs to commercial equipment.
• Athletic field maintenance - Including field preparations, layout and lining.
• Ability to read and interpret architectural, mechanical and electrical blueprints.
• Ability to perform weekly/monthly safety inspections related to a variety of systems. Boilers, water circulating systems, emergency lighting systems, HVAC systems, Fire Alarm systems.
• Computer skills – Ability to use a laptop as an effective resource to do the essential duties of the job. Ability to use email as a means of communication. Ability to search and find parts and owner’s manuals on-line. Experience with BAS controls or the ability to learn how to program the various HVAC system BAS controls throughout the district.
• Education & training – Desire and ability to participate in continuous improvement through continued education in areas of essential duties.
• Perform grounds work - When required assist and support with grounds keeping, mowing and snow removal, irrigation work, etc.
• Operate District owned vehicles/equipment in a safe/efficient manner while obeying all traffic laws.
• Perform additional duties related to assigned work by the Director of Operations or Maintenance Coordinator(s).
