Job summary

Carbondale Community High School District 165 is seeking a Maintenance Technician to maintain school buildings and grounds. The role operates on a 12-month full-time schedule, Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with duties across electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems.

Starting pay is not less than $19.85 per hour under IMRF, with responsibilities including safety, preventive maintenance, and coordination with the Maintenance Director. Travel between sites may be required.

Qualifications

• Minimum high school diploma or equivalent. Prefer training or experience with electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems.
• Two years of relevant work experience preferred; formal training may substitute.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance and service tasks for buildings and grounds.
• Use power tools and repair electrical equipment such as lighting and ballasts.
• Adjust heating and cooling controls, boilers and pumps as needed.
• Repair and replace windows, doors, glass and fixtures.
• Undertake routine maintenance like cleaning air handling units and oils.
• Assist in snow/ice removal and secure buildings after shifts.

Position Purpose

Under the direct supervision of the Maintenance, to maintain school buildings and building and grounds in orderly, neat, safe and operable condition.

Qualifications

Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent. Prefer training or equivalent experience in working with electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems. Training and certification as an asbestos worker preferred. Must be able to work independently.

Performance Responsibilities

Performs maintenance and service tasks related to the overall operation of the buildings and grounds, involving any or a combination of the following:

• 1) Use of power tools such as drills, saws, power drain openers, etc.
• 2) Repair of electrical equipment such as lighting fixtures, replaces ballasts and routinely replaces bulbs and tubes.
• 3) Makes routine and minor adjustments to heating and air conditioning controls, turns on boilers and pumps.
• 4) Replaces or helps to replace window and door glass.
• 5) Repairs lockers, desks, file cabinets etc.
• 6) Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of air handling units, cleaning filters, oiling motors and shafts.
• 7) Trims shrubs and trees as necessary.
• 8) Repairs flush valves etc. and makes minor plumbing repairs as necessary.
• 9) Helps to carry out preventative maintenance programs; apply enzymes to drains on a systematic basis.
• 10) Is responsible for safekeeping of equipment and maintenance tools assigned to him/her.
• 11) Assists in snow/ice removal as necessary.
• 12) Repairs and adjusts door closers, crash bars and related equipment.
• 13) Has major responsibility for locking doors and securing building at end of school day, and at end of maintenance shift.
• 14) Informs Maintenance Director of any problems which occur during maintenance shift.
• 15) Follows through with work orders as assigned by the Maintenance Director, and reports time and date of successful completion, including online work orders.
• 16. Performs basic functions of EMS; adjust and check temps.
• 17. Responsible for maintaining facilities and athletic fields as assigned.
• 18. All other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Director.

Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Equipment

Uses hand tools of trade and related power equipment, including saws, drills, routers, planers, sanders, jointers, and stationary power equipment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of fundamental tools, materials, practices, maintenance, methods and procedures in the carpentry, plumbing, and electrical trades.
• Knowledge of building code conformance standards for carpentry, plumbing, electricity, electrical installation, and repair.
• Knowledge of occupational safety and health laws and regulations.
• Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with others.
• Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure.
• Ability to describe orally or in writing maintenance or repair problems as needed.
• Ability to troubleshoot, problem solve and resolve electrical or electricity issues.
• Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.

Safety Requirements

• Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment used.
• Wears appropriate safety gear.

Travel Requirements

Frequent travel between schools, or between schools and central offices, may be required.
