The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is hiring a hotel maintenance technician to support maintenance across rooms, public spaces, offices, and grounds. The role requires basic trades, painting, plumbing, and electrical tasks, with a focus on safety and timely response to calls.

Founded in 1926, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is a private, not-for-profit educational, historic, and cultural institution that owns and operates one of the largest and best-known museum complexes in the world. Our mission is “that the future may learn from the past” through preserving and restoring 18th-century Williamsburg, Virginia’s colonial capital. We engage, inform, and inspire people to learn about this historic capital, the events that occurred here, and the diverse peoples who helped shape a new nation.

Today, Colonial Williamsburg is the largest living history museum in the U.S. The Historic Area is the 301-acre restored colonial capital with 88 original buildings and 525 buildings reconstructed to how they appeared in the 18th century through extensive archaeological, architectural, and documentary research. The Historic Area is staffed by highly trained, historically dressed interpreters and expert tradespeople who bring the 18th century to life. The Foundation also owns and operates two world‑class museums, the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, The Bob and Marion Wilson Teacher Institute, and a renowned research library, the John D Rockefeller Jr Library.

Upon being hired for this position, you will enter a 90-day Part-Time Probationary status, working up to 40 hours per week.

After completing the probationary period, you will become eligible for Full-Time status with benefits.

About the Position

Performs basic services and simple repairs for rooms, public spaces, offices, back of house spaces, and grounds in and around the hotels and conference centers. Knowledge and skillsets in painting; light mechanical, plumbing problems, and resolving minor problems with electronic devices. Moves furniture and equipment. Assist other maintenance staff members in performing work. Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA regulations, safety policies, and work practices in all work assignments. Monitors spaces for unusual operations, safety concerns, and aesthetic issues, and initiates correct actions.

Essential Functions:

  1. Adheres to safety regulations and polices.
  2. Participates in on-the-job training from experienced maintenance staff.
  3. Response to maintenance calls for all spaces and grounds of the hotels that include but are not limited to heating, cooling, plumbing, ceilings, walls, floors, pools, fountains, and televisions. Tasks may include programming thermostats and television remotes, adjusting space temperatures, clearing plugged toilets and drains, cleaning pools and fountains, and touching up paint on walls, ceilings, and doors.
  4. Requests assistance if help is required to properly make repairs.
  5. Performs minor repairs on items such as cleaning sliding door tracks, windows latches, trim touchup, furniture touchup, and bathroom partition hardware.
  6. Assists with performing demolition work as instructed.
  7. Patches and repairs drywall walls and ceilings for example scratches and dents.
  8. Touches up paint and performs complete hotel space paint outs as instructed and in accordance with Benjamin Moore specifications and foundation guidelines.
  9. Replaces ceilings tiles as needed.
  10. Performs simple preventative maintenance and repairs that includes but is not limited to drywall and paint touchups on walls and ceilings, lubricating door hinges and slide tracks, cleaning and replacing filters, checking settings on thermostats, cleaning light fixtures and replacing lightbulbs, replacing electrical cover plates on switches and receptacles. This may include cleaning sills, light fixtures, building décor, and replacing light bulbs/lamps over six feet above finished floor.
  11. Uses ladders, scaffold, and lifts.
  12. Clean pool filters, debris from pools and fountains, and surrounding areas.
  13. Programs thermostats to set environmental standard parameters.
  14. Assist maintenance staff in all types of repairs, modifications, and new installations as assigned.
  15. Moves furniture, equipment, and materials that may require use of hand trucks, electric powered lifts, dollies, or physical means.
  16. Ensures hotel systems, physical spaces, and grounds are safe. Identifies and effectively communicates any safety issues related to grounds, architectural elements, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems. Addresses unsafe conditions immediately.
  17. Provide "on call" coverage 24 hours a day when scheduled.
  18. This position requires the ability to work nights, weekends or shift work as required by supervisor.
  19. This position is deemed essential personnel and is required to report whether the foundation is closed or not, regardless of the emergency, weather related or otherwise.
  20. Performs any other related duties as assigned such as shoveling snow at entrances to the hotels and broadcasting ice melt, and surveying walkways for icy spots and placing ice melt to eliminate hazards.

Qualifications:

  1. Experience in maintenance tasks in a hotel work environment.
  2. Two years of experience in hotel maintenance with knowledge and hands‑on skillsets that include but not limited to painting; light mechanical, plumbing problems, and resolving minor problems with electronic devices.
  3. Good communication skills, both oral and written
  4. Experience with or ability to learn and work with computer maintenance management systems and Microsoft Office.
  5. Ability to read and explain architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing problems.
  6. High school diploma or G.E.D certificate required.
  7. Must possess a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record based on The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s criteria.
    • Must be able to provide a 5-year Motor Vehicle Record prior to employment
    • Must be at least 21 years of age
    • May not have more than 1 moving violation or at fault accident within 12 months
    • May not have more than 2 moving violations or at fault accidents within 36 months
    • May not have any serious motor vehicle violations including but not limited to excessive speeding, reckless driving, DUI/DWI, suspended or revoked license, etc.
  8. Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds, ability to work at heights above 30 feet on ladders, lifts, and scaffolds.
  9. Ability to work shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency calls.
  10. Employee will be required to participate in the department’s monthly safety program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Certificate held in one or more of the following:
    1. Air Conditioning and Refrigeration
    2. HVAC Technician
    3. Electrician
  2. Graduate from a trades school or pursuing a maintenance related career.
