Job summary

Poplar Springs Hospital is seeking a proactive Maintenance Technician to join our team in Petersburg, VA. The role involves performing a wide range of building maintenance tasks, plumbing repairs, and preventive maintenance to ensure facility reliability.

You will also assist with HVAC system upkeep and oversee work by outside contractors, while maintaining a safe and courteous environment for patients and staff.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma and trade/technical training required.
  • Previous experience in general maintenance work required.
  • Valid Virginia driver's license and minimum license level as applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide variety of general building maintenance repairs and services.
  • Repair plumbing: replace washers/faucets, fix leaks, unclog drains; inspect sprinkler systems.
  • Paint interiors/exteriors, hang wallpaper, assemble furniture, install fixtures.
  • Monitor and maintain HVAC systems and assist in contractor oversight.

For more than 30 years Poplar Springs Hospital has been guided by its mission of helping those who need the full continuum of behavioral health services. Our facility offers behavioral and psychological treatment for adults and adolescents through our acute programs, adolescent residential programs, as well as programs for active duty military. Poplar Springs Hospital is located in Petersburg, Virginia, 20 minutes south of Richmond and 50 minutes north of North Carolina. Poplar Springs Hospital is seeking an energetic, driven, professional to join our Maintenance team. The maintenance technician will be able to identify customer groups both in and out of the hospital (contractors, vendors, patients, staff, physicians, etc.) and to perform job tasks and responsibilities in such a way as to exceed customer expectations. Perform a wide variety of general building maintenance repairs and services (ie: mechanical and preventative maintenance tasks, as well as inspections, servicing, repair and overhaul of equipment, vehicles and facilities of the hospital). Replace washers, faucets and seals on malfunctioning plumbing equipment; repair leaky faucets and clean clogged drains; install and repair sprinklers. Paint interior and exterior walls and cabinets; hang wallpaper and pictures; assemble furniture. Install light bulbs, doors, cabinets, paneling, formica, carpet, and bulletin boards. Other duties as assigned.

Licensure/Certification/Registration
  • CPR / First Aid - not required
  • Valid driver's license, and in good standing +1 or higher with Virginia License
  • HVAC Certification
Education/Experience
  • High school and trade or technical school education required
  • Previous experience in general maintenance work required.
General Requirements
  • Must be at least 21 years of age per Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services.
  • Must have patience, tact, and a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm.
  • Good communication skills; must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Basic clerical skills, basic experience with office equipment (telephone, copy machine, fax, etc.)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to problem solve and accept feedback when circumstances warrant such actions.
  • Willingness to interact with patients with varying levels of cognitive functioning.
Special Qualifications
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability and willingness to work professionally in a team with other personnel, patients, families, etc.
  • Responsible for the completion of all maintenance service requests as assigned.
  • Assist in monitoring all work being performed by outside contractors.
  • Maintain monthly inspection and maintenance of building and HVAC roof motors and fans and replace as needed; clean, grease and paint all equipment used in heating and ventilation.
  • Monitor and maintain all building systems as assigned.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with the mentally ill, disabled, emotionally upset, varying age populations, and at times, hostile people within the hospital.
  • Must maintain high levels of personal integrity and willingness to be flexible with work schedule to meet hospital needs.
  • Must maintain a safe environment at all times.
