New Hire Experience:

Job Summary:

To provide strategic and operational leadership for the District’s maintenance program by planning, organizing, and implementing preventive maintenance, inspections, and compliance practices that ensure a safe, efficient environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Hires, assesses, and oversees the performance of assigned staff members
  • Plans maintenance programs and establishes a schedule of preventive maintenance
  • Inspects or arranges for inspection of schools and buildings to determine maintenance and repair requirements
  • Demonstrates knowledge of OSHA, AHERA, NEC, U.B.C., ADEQ, and local and state laws
  • Prepares specifications for QA consultants, re-inspections, abatement projects, bid documents, and handles emergency asbestos problems
  • Demonstrates knowledge of all types of Energy Management Systems pertaining to the HVAC-R industry
  • Possesses knowledge of building construction methods and building trades
  • Performs Asbestos Designated Party responsibilities
  • Oversees and maintains mold remediation and district indoor air quality standards
  • Recommends priorities for repair projects
  • Estimates labor and material project costs
  • Provide project management and work order management for complex multi-trade projects, including scheduling, resource management, staff and contractor oversight, and project closeout.
  • Assigns crew members to maintenance construction work
  • Recommends standards for maintenance programs
  • Inspects, or arranges for inspections, to determine compliance with standards
  • Interviews and recommends the hiring of new personnel
  • Requisitions materials and personnel as needed and approves requisitions
  • Assists in solving problems and determining future personnel and material needs
  • Coordinates projects with other leadsmen and work order specialists
  • Oversees timekeeping for maintenance employees
  • Collaborates with department and school leaders, supervisors, and staff to align processes and procedures while actively seeking their input, and leads or participates in joint committees and working groups
  • Focuses on continuous improvement by analyzing data, assessing systems and timelines, and recommending adjustments to enhance procedures and strategies, providing root cause analysis and suggestions to administration
  • Identifies opportunities to optimize the use of various information systems and liaises with system representatives to stay informed on updates and explore potential improvements
  • Works with administration and staff to identify ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness in assigned areas and related departmental functions
  • Develops and executes both short- and long-term goals for assigned responsibilities
  • Stays informed on federal and state laws and best practices relevant to the assigned area through ongoing research
  • Coordinate maintenance activities with Capital Improvement Projects (CIP), bond-funded construction and facility modernization efforts to ensure continuity of operations and minimize disruption to district facilities.
  • Administer district maintenance service contracts including contractor performance evaluations, contract compliance, change order review, warranty administration, invoice verification and project closeout.
  • Develop, implement and maintain district-wide maintenance standards, technical specifications and best practices for building systems to promote consistency and long-term asset performance.
  • Direct district-wide regulatory compliance programs related to maintenance operations including OSHA, AHERA, EPA, ADEQ, indoor air quality and applicable federal, state and local regulations.
  • Actively manage the FMX work order system, including maintenance and planned maintenance requests, and monitor associated performance metrics to ensure timely completion, accurate reporting, accountability and continuous improvement of maintenance operations.
  • Manages special projects and performs additional tasks related to areas of responsibility as assigned by administration
  • Assists with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools
Required Qualifications:
  • Associate’s degree required. Five or more years of directly related and progressively responsible maintenance or facilities experience may be considered equivalent to the degree requirement
  • Possess and maintain a current valid Arizona driver’s license
  • Must have current AHERA Contractor Supervisor/Certification, current AHERA Building Inspector Certification, and current AHERA Management Planner Certification
  • Must have or be able to attain within the first (6) months of employment Project Designer Certification
  • Must have verifiable supervisory or management responsibilities for a period of two years
  • One year field experience with working knowledge of all disciplines of asbestos, 40CFR part 763, and asbestos containing materials in school

  • Ability and willingness to work alternate shifts, after hours and weekends (overtime pay and compensatory time do not apply)
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
  • Duties take place both inside school buildings and outdoors on school grounds, often in varying weather conditions
  • Work in classrooms, hallways, gyms, auditoriums, offices, and mechanical rooms
  • Frequent time spent in maintenance shops, storage rooms, and utility areas
  • May require being available for emergency repairs outside of regular working hours.
  • Oversees maintenance workers, and contractors
  • Long periods of standing or walking across large school campuses
  • May need to lift or carry equipment, tools, and materials, often weighing 25–75 pounds
